The group was founded in July 2004, at the Veterans for Peace annual meeting in Boston by seven veterans: former Executive Director Kelly Dougherty (US Army), Tim Goodrich (US Air Force), Mike Hoffman (US Marine Corps), Alex Ryabov (Corps US Marines), Jimmy Massey (US Marine Corps), Isaiah Pallos (US Marine Corps), and Diana Morrison (US Army).

Members of the organization are in 50 US states, Washington, DC, Canada, Europe, and at various bases abroad, including bases in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its membership is over 1,800 people.
