# 1044 - Cristina's Coins - Part 9

The info below comes from the Royal Canadian Mint's COA (Certificate of Authenticity) of this coin or from the book Canadian Collector Coins, vol 2, 8th Edition, by M. Drake or https://en.numista.com/ , or https://www.wikipedia.org/.

Due to the coronavirus I cannot travel to visit my daughters and bring back the coins I bought. I asked Cristina, my elder daughter, who lives in Canada, to take some photos and send them to me. These will be the coins that will comprise this series.

The ninth is a 2016 CAD $8 "Dragon Dance".

It weights 7.96g with 99.99% silver purity and Matte Proof finish. Its mintage was 5,038 units and the issue price was CAD $29.95.

Dragons have been a part of Asian culture for thousands of years. Unlike the fire-breathing villains of the West, Asian dragons are friendly and benevolent creatures that play a key role in celebrations, particularly Chinese New Year. The Spring Festival (Chun-jie) is a critical time of rebirth that signals the upcoming planting season and can always benefit from the dragon's wisdom, longevity and life-giving rain!

As Chinese people began to immigrate to other parts of the world, the powerful dragon was sure to follow. Today, wherever Chinese communities exist around the globe, one can expect to see a dragon dancing in the streets sometime in January or February. This is certainly true of Canada where almost 5% of its population is Chinese.

People join the spectacle waving flags and banners. Drums, cymbals, gongs and firecrackers keep evil spirits at bay as a coordinated team of dancers moves the dragon's long, serpentine body. Each person holds a section of its body atop a pole while the leader carries the “pearl of wisdom,” moving it up and down, to the left and right, for the dragon to follow as it weaves its way through the streets.

Designed by Canadian artist Harvey Chan, your coin features a traditional Chinese dragon, its long, serpentine body disappearing far into the distance. The dragon's undulating form conveys the dynamic energy of its dance as numerous people with poles move its body above their heads. Above the dragon, tiny bursts add a festive tone to the image. The dragon's face is reminiscent of a horse, but it also has a beard, whiskers, fangs, horns, fish scales and is holding the “pearl of wisdom” is its mouth.

That is nicely detailed and very pretty!  It reminds me of a time about 40 years ago, when Mike and I were just getting started and I worked for an insurance company.  There was a Halloween costume dance, and the girls from the office and I created a Chinese New Year dragon as a group costume.  We dressed in shorts and green tights with little booties and bells.  The head of the dragon was fashioned after how I did a float in high school, with chicken wire for the body of the head, and tissue paper to create the design.  The body was made of green cloth.  I manned the head and the girls filled out the body of the dragon.  I got the DJ to play Boogie Shoes by KC and the Sunshine Band, as I had created a choreographed dance to the song.  Needless to say, it was a hit; we had tons of fun with it.
