Garden Update - First Week of Spring!
### Happy spring!!!

This really does feel like spring here because the weather has suddenly warmed up a bit and a lot of growth is starting to happen. The garden is calling me. It seems that there is so much new things happening every day that there is no way I could cover it all in one post. But the joy in the garden is invigorating and inspires me to want to share. Its the intention that counts, right?

The lettuce seed that I broadcast in this flat are coming up strong and showing 2nd and 3rd sets of leaves!! I just set this flat outside where it won't get full sun to harden off for a few days before transplanting.

I seeded this flat of lettuce just as the lettuce in the first sowing were starting to peak out of the soil!! They will be a second wave of transplanting shortly after the first flat is transplanted. I also direct sowed some lettuce seed a little less than a week ago.

In case you're wondering why the heck would I be starting SOO much lettuce?? It is because I took on a seed contract with a local seed company and they are buying lettuce seed from me by the ounce. Lettuce is one of their top selling categories of seed so I am growing as much as I can in our garden setting.

Nearby one of our broccolis are showing their first set of leaves!

Outside is a flat of Astragalus that is starting to pop up! This is another seed contract. It does best with a few weeks of cold stratification. I had sowed it just over a month ago and it sat out in the snow and rain. Apparently this early spring warmth is all it needed to signal that it is time to sprout! When they get a little larger I will transplant them.

The Russian kale that I direct sowed in this bed last spring overwintered very nicely.

They are showing the first signs of new growth and are promising to soon spurt into lots of new leaves! I will take some time in the near future to prune off many of the extra branches so that the leaves don't crowd too much... that will be several meals already!

I just pulled off all the dead leaves before I took this photo. Before I did that it was not as attractive a sight... now the kale is very photogenic ;)

Well, apparently we like to eat lemongrass in our fish and curries and other dishes because I ended up starting more lemongrass from the bottom pieces!!

They got potted up and went into the greenhouse.

Thanks @wildhomesteading! We grew out a few small seed contracts last year and learned a lot and had fun so we are adding a few more this year. I am growing out about 7 or 8 types of seeds for contract... we'll see how it goes in our garden space!  The greenhouse was built by my landlord and is attached to the west facing side of the straw bale. I would like it more if was more south west because it only gets afternoon sun. But even still it is a HUGE advantage to no greenhouse at all. Nice--looks like a nice space to work in. Is venting through the door? Or does it have vents in it? I really like those automatic spring based vents that I have seen on some greenhouses. I've been looking into using those when I get around to building a greenhouse. Thanks for sharing!

Love the little green things growing now! I have only onions on this round, and they are up and growing well. Next week is the last round as I'm not doing much gardening this year. I will live vicariously through yours!

I love this time of year, of course in my climate we are not as far along and still have many days of frost ahead. My seedlings are happily breaking through on the windowsills. I always start some perrenial bulb/tubers this time of the year, like hostas, ferns, astilbe, liatrus etc, as they are much cheaper to start this way and I love seeing a Summer plant breaking through on the windowsill in cold March. Great plants @sagescrub I'll have to try the lemon grass trick (Though it is an annual in my zone 7) but I could bring it in this way overwinter.

Thanks for the nice comment @donnadavisart :) I had to look up hostas, astilbe and liatrus ... they are all beautiful!  We are starting tubers as well, just about to plant out some jchokes and starting purple sweet potatoes for the first time ever in the greenhouse. We are also in zone 6b/7a. I recently learned that the lemongrass will overwinter ... even if the foliage is killed back by freezing temps it can grow from the roots again the following year. I am assuming that the roots might not survive in much colder climates without lots of mulching. I am also going to experiment with starting lemongrass from seed as I got my hands on some recently :)
