Our family lives in my mother's parental home and it was built before 6 decades. It has a beautiful roof and was covered with clay roof tiles called Ulu in Sinhala, for all these years. After years, the roof was bad in condition therefore my parents decided to repair the roof. 

Our roof is somewhat complex roof. My late grandfather was a well-known carpenter in the village and around villages. May be this is his talent. Actually we saw the complexity of the roof only while construction though we lived there for decades.

I am kind of person who still love traditional things with unique values and importance. Good things about this tile roof are they reduce the temperature inside the home, eco-friendly and do not have bad effect on health.

When we place tiles on roof, it is needed to fix more timber rods than sheets. Another thing is there can be more spaces in between tiles than sheets as we need larger number of tiles for a roof than sheets. After removing tiles, we have tile stacks everywhere in the garden. I could not imagine the number but there are many.

The first thing I love tile roofs is coldness inside the house. But still my parents' decision processed and they replaced the tiles with sheets. We will have bad effects sooner and would be very hot inside the house.

Do you know how these tiles are made? Clay is used to make these roof tiles and we cannot use every type of clay for the purpose. After making the shape of the tile it is heated inside a furnace and taken out as a strong tile piece after recommended time. Therefore no health issues found. But it is said that asbestos sheets have some health issues due to its dust.

Somehow, though I like or not we are under asbestos sheet roof now. Yet I remember the coldness under the clay tile roof before.
