Am 8. Juni erreichten wir das Icy-Kap, dessen eskimoischer Name Qajaerserfik lautet oder "die Stelle,  wo die Kajaks verloren gehen". Wohl war es Frühjahr, aber die Zeit der Schneestürme war noch nicht vorbei. Der bekannte Handels- und Missionsplatz Wainwright war so vollständig im Schnee begraben, daß man große Mühe hatte, überhaupt in die Häuser zu kommen.

Die Utorqarmiut erhielten den Namen Wolfsvolk, weil sie ihr Land im Winter verließen und gleich den Wölfen mit den Renntieren zogen. Diese Wanderungen gingen in der Zeit zwischen Oktober und März vor sich und führten die gefrorenen Flüsse hinab, die sich mit ihren zahllosen Nebenflüssen gleich Wegen und Stegen durch das dichte Buschband der Steppe und die Talstriche der Gebirge zogen. Wegen der großen Schwierigkeit bei der Futterbeschaffung hatte man nur einige wenige Hunde mit sich, so daß die Männer und Frauen ihre Schlitten selbst ziehen mußten.

Wenn ein Wolfsfänger mit dem Pelz eines neu gefangen Wolfes über der Schulter in sein Dorf zurückkam, mußte er bei seiner Ankunft in derselben Richtung wie die Sonne um sein Haus herumgehen, wobei er seinen Absatz viermal gegen die Hausmauer stieß, wenn es ein Wolf war, fünfmal, wenn es eine Wölfin war. Solchermaßen wurden die Zeremonien mit einer Andeutung darauf eingeleitet, daß für einen Wolf vier Tage Tabu gelten, für eine Wölfin aber fünf.

 Im selben Augenblick, wo die Tritte gegen die Hausmauer gehört wurden, mußten alle Frauen, die sich  im Hause aufhielten, ihre Köpfe senken und das Gesicht von der Tür abwenden. Gleichzeitig sollte ein Mann herausspringen und zu allen anderen Häusern gehen, um den Männern die Nachricht von dem Fang zu bringen. Dann erschienen alle mit ihren Messern in der Hand in der Hoffnung, daß die Seeele des Wolfes, die sich noch im Fell befand, ihre Messer liebgewinnen und sich deshalb das nächstemal gerne von ihnen fangen lassen würde.

Katajjaq

Katajjaq (also pirkusirtuk and nipaquhiit) is a type of traditional competitive song, considered a game, usually held between two women. It is one of the world's few examples of overtone singing, a unique method of producing sounds that is otherwise best known in Tuvan throat-singing. When competing, two women stand face-to-face and sing using a complex method of following each other, thus that one voice hits a strong accent while the other hits a weak, melding the two voices into a nearly indistinguishable single sound. They repeat brief motifs at staggered intervals, often imitating natural sounds, like those of geese, caribou or other wildlife, until one runs out of breath, trips over her own tongue, or begins laughing, and the contest is then over. "The old woman who teaches the children corrects sloppy intonation of contours, poorly meshed phrase displacements, and vague rhythms exactly like a Western vocal coach."[9]
Vocal games

Inuit vocal games are usually played by two women facing each other in close proximity. They use the other participant's oral cavity as resonators but may also play under a kitchen pot for the resonances to be more pronounced. The game consists of repeating meaningless words in tight rhythmic canon. The strong accent of one participant coincides with the weak of the other. The breathing of the players are thus also alternated. Vocal techniques include voiced and voiceless articulations and different articulations, and different placement of sound in the chest, throat and nose areas.

Vocal games are unique to the Inuit.
