***The Kepler Space Telescope has made its name of finding many exoplanets but recently scientists managed to see and describe a new type of supernova.*** https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d4/Keplers_supernova.jpg *X-ray, Optical & Infrared Composite of Kepler's Supernova Remnant* **Source: By NASA/ESA/JHU/R.Sankrit & W.Blair [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons** Supernova explosions either happen when a white dwarf gains enough mass by siphoning its space compatriot or when a massive star collapses. Usually, supernova explosions happen suddenly and then dim over many months. But recently astronomers found extraordinary and rare supernova explosions that shine brightly only for weeks. They are called Fast Evolving Luminous Transients (FELT) and they caused a bit of a concern for scientists as classical supernova models didn’t account for them. And another problem was that they were always discovered quite late, as they were already quite dim. Recently, Brad Tucker and his colleagues from the Australian National University had the chance to watch such an explosion winch got the designation KSN 2015K. With the of Kepler telescope, they managed to capture almost all of the explosion. The star exploded and reached its peak brightness in just about 2.2 days. That is about 8 times faster than with the standard Ia supernova. And it took it only about 6.8 days to dim to half of that while traditional supernova takes months to reach that. Tucker and his colleagues think that the reason behind this fast dimming is that the star is surrounded by a dense cocoon of gas and dust. So when the kinetic energy released during the explosion hits the cocoon almost all the energy is transformed into radiation. One more mystery still remains though. Why do FELT type stars have such cacoons? **Sources:** * https://www.space.com/40086-rare-supernova-star-explosion-seen-by-kepler.html * http://www.anu.edu.au/news/all-news/astronomers-witness-death-throes-of-a-cocooned-star * https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-018-0423-2

What a spectular photo. I watched a documentary on the Hubble Space Telescope on Smithsonian Channel the other day. The very next day, I read the launch of the next-generation space telescope will be delayed. I was so bummed out.
