Introducing my Hometown - Ulverstone: The Tasmanian home of Chips, Bogans and Old People #TeamAustralia

After seeing a number of posts under the #introduceyourhometown, I thought it was about time to introduce you to mine!

From my #introduceyourself post -------> [HERE](https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@scooter77/introduction-mark-2-a-taswegian-adventure-to-the-gold-coast) you would see that I emigrated from the Apple Isle of Tasmania a number of years ago to take up residence in Sunny Queensland. Where did I come from, I hear you say! Well stay tuned and I will take you back to a land and time that someone sort of forgot. A land of green pastures, scenic beauty and banjos, lots of banjos (aka deliverance)!

# Location
I was born and bred in the small town of Ulverstone, situated on the banks of the meandering Leven River, smack bank in the middle of the North-West Coast of Tasmania, the Apple Isle.Now where is that I hear you ask? Well its in between the two major cities of Devonport and Burnie (20,000 people each) and is the largest town in the state (13,000 people).

# Clock Tower
Saluting the numerous people who have fought and fallen in wars, the most prominent feature of the Ulverstone skyline is the Clock Tower, otherwise known as 'The Clock' to locals, right in the middle of town. The clock is an imposing, drab grey structure sitting on top of a map of tassie (not that type of 'tassie map'!). Driving into the town centre will take you directly past this iconic landmark of the world, just don't scrape the side of you car as you round the base of 'The Clock'.

# The Main Drag
Friday night in Ulverstone is not complete without driving 'laps' up and down the 'Main Drag' (or Main Street) in town. This circuit starts at 'The Clock', heads down the 'Main Drag' and ends with a uy (U-turn) at the end of the street to head back up to the clock. This U-turn is mostly illegal and the illegality is always increased by the depositing of rubber on the road whilst doing said 'u-turn'.

# Chip (Fries) Factory
Surrounded by some of the most fertile farming land in the country, potatoes are grown but the paddock full. It is only natural then, that the town would have a chip (French fries for foreigners) factory. You had not graduated from school without an excursion to the 'Chip Factory' where you could revel in the delight of potatoes being peeled, potatoes being sliced, potatoes being cooked...... well you get the picture!

# Robins Footy Team
The offical football team is the Ulverstone Robins. In a town of 13,000 people, there are actually 4 football teams and a whole lot of additional testosterone floating around the place. "You no play football, me beat you"! You get the picture.

# Old People Central
One of the saving graces for the town in times of economic hardship is the overwhelming number of retirement homes and pension recipients. For a smallish town, there were 5 large retirement villas and 2 high care centres for the elderly. This made pension day a major event each week as the rush for purple rinse and denture glue was on. My great-grandpa made for an interesting sight in town. He owned an original GTS Monaro, V8 powerhouse! His only issue was getting pulled over by the police for going too slow and holding up traffic! He eventually forfeited his licence.

# Banjo City
Surrounding the town is a veritable collection of small country towns and farming village, or as I like to call them, Banjo cities! Where men are men and the sheep are nervous! Have you ever seen the movie "Deliverance"? If not, check it out and you will know what I mean.

Now for all its flaws, issues and reasons to leave, my family is still there and I visit regularly. The serenity and fresh air is second to none, however the lack of work and 'everybody knows you' mentality is the reason I left. I would not be the person I am today without the influence of this little town and I am grateful for that. If you ever get to visit, stop in and check it out.

Ulverstone, you gave me life and made me who I am, now I'm gone I am as happy as a clam?
