Kayla... A Finish The Story Entry
*Somewhere not too far away a stereo played...*

*The music was faint, but clear enough to carry through its joyful yet melancholic melody..*

*It was one of those sounds which when heard made one crave for some sort of indefinable freedom. That craving that comes with hearing the distant whistle of a train at night...*

*Manny fought the memories. He felt it was a losing battle but he fought still...*

*Then inevitably he lost.. Nostalgia crawled in...*

*Manny closed his eyes..*

*The music faded away...*

***Kayla...***

.........💠.........

Kayla’s boots hit the ground. The dry earth scattered into dust clouds as she strode across the front of the house. Manny was late again.

The harsh sun beat down against her brown skin. She looked off into the distance, the heat haze sat above the plain, rippling the sight of the far off mountains.

She lifted her arm, checking her watch. The sun reflected across the scratched screen. She ran her finger over the deepest scratch. It had still worked after her accident.

A young boy came hurtling out of the front door and blindly ran straight into her. The force knocked them both to the ground.

She fell hard. Her limbs scraped against loose stones and the scorched dirt.

“What in the devil are you playing at?”

She got up quickly, patting herself off in the process.

The young boy sat still. Tears rolling down his dirty cheeks. He coughed as he struggled to breathe, the fine dust getting into his lungs.

Manny stepped onto the veranda and placed his hands on his hips. His shirt hung open and his hat tilted on his head.

Kayla shook her head at the sight of him. She had known Manny her entire life but she was always surprised to see him so relaxed at his home.

“This your boy Manny?”

“Aye, that be Thomas.”

“He make yer’ late then?”

Manny walked down the front steps and helped his son up. Thomas took the offered hand reluctantly.

Kayla chuckled to herself.

“Better bring him with us. ‘Bout time he learned the family trade.”

Manny and Thomas followed Kalya towards her truck. The truck smelled of licorice and sawdust. The engine rattled into life. Thomas slid into the centre. His eyes still pooling with tears.

Manny opened up a hip flask, taking a sip. He growled as the harsh liquid hit his throat. He passed it to Kayla, she drank as she drove across the open land.

“What them tears about then?”

She asked as she passed the flask back.

Manny laughed. “He got a clip round the ear for talking cheek to his mother, didn’t ya’ boy?”

Kayla gripped the wheel tighter as the truck bounced over the rough terrain.

“Well, that seems rightly deserved then. Ya’ don’t talk like that to your ma kid, ya’ just don’t.”

The truck swayed as the tires followed the grooves and tracks of the land. Thomas was the most affected by the force, having spent very little time in vehicles of any kind. He watched as the truck traveled through a river, unaffected by the water.

Manny lit up a cigarette and tilted his head back as he exhaled. The smoke filled the air quickly, Thomas started coughing.

“Quit it will ya manny. The kid got weak lungs or summit’?”

“He’s a weaklin’ alright.”

Manny laughed as he clapped his son on the back...

.........💠.........

*He didn't know when, but Manny realised his eyes were open again..*

*He noticed too that the music had returned. That terrible, sweet yet annoyingly painful music. Sounds that tortured and soothed his soul...*

*He noticed the boy still stood in front of him. It seemed he was trying to say something. It looked like that something was intended for Manny.*

*Manny tried to listen, or at least he thought he tried. But this boy, this fellow, this person.. he stirred Manny's memories. Stirred it bad...*

*Manny tried to concentrate on the words he knew were coming, but he couldn't. This face, this face... It made him want to think again, try again, just close his eyes again...*

*Slowly the music returned...*

.........💠.........

Manny set the flask down and walked towards Kayla. The look in his eyes were familiar enough for her to quickly understand.

She responded with a meaningful little smile, her thoughts momentarily off the job at hand. But when Manny reached her, she placed a restrictive hand on his already bare chest.

"How 'bout the boy?" She asked

Manny tried to remove the hand and ignore the question. But when he saw she was serious, he reluctantly decided to give in.

"Busy enough to let us have thirty minutes."

Kayla twisted her neck to one side, a way of hers when she needed assurance over something. Manny didn't delay this time.

"Trust me..." He replied, to her unspoken question.

And she did...

But she never should have...

.........💠.........

*Manny remembered now. He remembered the screams that day decades ago. He remembered them like it was yesterday...*

*The screams of Thomas.. The screams of his boy.. his son...*

*And for years he had believed him dead...*

*Until today. Today when this figure had appeared at his door step. This figure, this boy, all grown up.. with memories...*

*Manny found he could now focus on those words the figure kept on repeating. Slowly, he concentrated, and made them out...*

*Those words...*

*"Dad, I have come to learn the family business."*

*And as Manny repeated them again and again in his head, somewhere not too far away a stereo played...*

THE END?

I wasn't sure which of the characters to pick up from the story as my own protagonist. So i decided to leave it open somewhat. Perhaps I may decide to let father and son go after the business (Kay...?) somewhere where there isn't a 500 word limit, lol.

I'm... a bit at a loss of words rn. Not because the story induced me to this state, but I just can't even with this World. I do so much to help everybody, even being a blind person pointing the right way, and yet... Well how could one truly describe this? Maybe it is the stubborness, may it's the arrogance to work up all night and never check what the fuck I do when I post things online. Maybe I am truly was insane and now I'm brought back to sanity due to all the bs in the World and now I have to fucking live within it and actually address it. I have to actually confront the dæmons, not even the World's most powerful drugs can keep me away from them... Not like I could afford any nor would it actually help me, only hinder when they come back and hit me harder. And harder. AND harder. AND HARDER!...
I'm sorry babunia @seesladen, I know this catharsis wasn't directed towards you... This post unfortunately has to be a victim of me, who decidely has no time to even think straight when everybody's heading to the gutter and I have to struggle with a whole lot others in shittier situations to yank them out before they become one of us. A poor, unfortunate victim; I don't want anybody I see collapse to the point of no return, I am merely blessed to even escape out of the point of no return. I want to have the privelege to collapse and just read something easy, like a god damn Dr. Suess book; unfortunately I am stuck having to deal with people that speak high but understand not even of high tongue... No, this is where I cut this off.

With sincerity that I actually loved this post and found it cathartic to my sudden reemergence of sanity, love Victor (yes, that is a part of my name; fuck off, you won't know which part or even if that's just a nickname).

So far, we hosted two "begin the story" experiments. One of them was particularly well executed. You, instead, tried to set the prompt in a sequence of states of mind and emotions(I see it mostly from an introspective point of view) ). It's particular, I give that.

I couldn't help to notice your comment about the 500 words threshold. There are contests that ask 50 words (exactly 50, not like here where I give a margin of tolerance), others that give the participant 24 hours to write the story and others that include all sort of limitations. Some of them are renowned as much as mine. I follow them sometimes and I never saw anyone complaining about the 50 words limit, for instance. It's a game and a challenge. Every game has its rules, take it or leave it. The 500 words have a specific meaning. A lot of amazing stories have been written within the 500 words and many will be written: stories that continue smoothly from the first half, with an engaging plot. It's so simple 🙂

We did do a "begin the story"? How did I miss it?

Hope you enjoyed my moment of muse though. I'd somehow found it hard of recent to pick up a muse off of the recent past stories, so I'd just watched from the side. Plus bad network makes commenting one hell of a nightmare for me. Lol...

Yeah, the 500 words. Did it sound like I was complaining? Oh, my bad. I did think it would in retrospect though, buh really it was just an excuse to justify why I stopped writing and left a lot untold, only hinted. We know you'd pardon this little fish if he'd wrote a thousand words by the way,lol...

Now let me hit the comment button and send this before this brief good service disappears. ✌️🙃

@calluna ·
A reality Manny never thought he'd had to face, memories, clearly unvisited for so long, returning to him, the only parts he could bear to face. Leaving the darkness of that day unwritten creates a vast space for imagination, what happened that Manny thought Thomas dead? Clearly something that also hurt or killed Kayla. Could it have been the Ma, finding out about with Manny and Kayla, going on some form of spree, or something similar, in which case, the family trade could be as innocent as teaching him the ropes on the farm, and the son, having now inherited it, needing to know the quirks of the farm. There are so many potential ways to read between the lines though. My favourite; the family trade was murder, or something equally dangerous. Someone came looking for Manny, shot Kayla dead, gave Manny some form of minor brain injury (thus the remembering, the distant music), and Manny assumed, also shot the boy, but no Thomas made it, and now, he'd ready to take up the mantel and possibly even avenge them, or maybe kill Manny, depending on how dark I'm feeling. Regardless of your initial intention, I always enjoy this style of cards-held-to-the-chest telling. It takes some time, to reflect, and fit the bits together, and relies on the reader bringing part of themselves to the tale, but then in the end, it's worth it. Very much enjoyed reflecting on this one <3

yeah I know it ;) and of course, my dear - there is so little you couldn't get away with! <3 Ahh i know the plight, but the poet in you does produce some beautiful prose. Exactly, the seesladen touch of a plot open enough for me to take it however i wish at the time!

@gaby-crb ·
That is a rather chilling conclusion. You kept the story flowing well with the changing point of view. I like that you circled back to the music playing, it made the whole story complete and well polished.

@wakeupkitty ·
I had to get used to the "way of speaking", but after reading it three times I even liked it more. I just wonder why Manny thought his son was dead.
