The Silence of The Night

<p>In the silence of the night</p>
<p>As I lie on my bed all alone</p>
<p>I wonder for maybe the ten-thousandth time,</p>
<p>What is my vice?</p>
<p>What have I done to be cast away?</p>
<p>Like the weak star, trying unsuccessfully to glow.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>As I listen to the distant sounds of the dogs howling into the night,</p>
<p>I realize with silent pang how much their ways are similar to my life,</p>
<p>In search of food and water they go from one place to another,</p>
<p>Like me; I who traverse the world,</p>
<p>Looking only for love and affection and nothing else.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>And in the silence of the night I ask God one thing and one thing only:</p>
<p>"That He let me live the rest of my days in peace,</p>
<p>And bring no affliction of sorrow or terror over me,</p>
<p>For I have not the courage to face Him now,</p>
<p>Since there is not that I can do,</p>
<p>Except pray to Him,</p>
<p>And feel, deep in my heart, that someday, all of this will be over,</p>
<p>And I will once again become ruler of my world,</p>
<p>With nothing to distress me, or cause me pain,"</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>But when that someday will arrive, I know not,</p>
<p>Besides the fact that when it truly will come,</p>
<p>With it will come the happiness that at this moment is far beyond my reach,</p>
<p>And it will on that day,</p>
<p>That I will truly learn to be me.</p>
