Perhaps you did not see what I saw in this text 1 Kings 17:1-16. Here it is: “And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.” (v7). I don’t understand. Was it not God who sent Elijah to the brook? How then can the water dry up in that stream? Even though there had not been rain for sometimes, I thought since God sent Elijah to that brook, it shall never dry up. Well, I was wrong. We just can’t put God into a cage. Although the brook dried up, God provided another alternative for Elijah. Read with me vv8-9, “And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.” God has several alternatives to choose from. The brook was one, the widow of Zarephath was another. God can also choose to use them one after the other. He moves in mysterious ways His wonders to perform.

Dearly beloved, how can God tell Joseph and Mary to run with Jesus to Egypt when Herod planned to kill the children in Matthew 2:13? “And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.” Is God afraid of Herod? Can’t God do it such that Herod’s soldiers will not see Jesus? Can’t the hand of anyone attempting to kill Jesus dry up and refuse to come down? God is God and He has multiple ways of solving any given problem at any given time. He cannot be limited to a particular equation. In your walk with God, the brooks may dry up sometimes. Never you worry, your God has alternatives He can use in succession if He so chooses. Trust God always like in Habakkuk 3:17-18, “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” He is your Father; He knows how much you can carry. Trust that He cares for you than you can care for yourself. Amen.
