Infrared Photography – Mushrooms growing on living tree bark

Seeing these grow on living trees makes me wonder, seems they are going deep into the bark and I wonder they spread into it with the tree still living.

<p>

Usually dead trees, like fallen wood will grow mushrooms. But sometimes they start growing when the tree is still alive.

I am curious, if they hurt the tree. By being an opening that things can get into the tree bark through it. Or if the mushrooms are sapping nutrients from the tree. I do not know but it would interesting to me to find out for sure.

Maybe the mushrooms emit something bugs dont like, and keeps them away from the tree stopping wood boaring insects from doing severe damage to the tree. Or maybe the mushrooms are the orginism that gives energy to the tree. Not the other way around as I earlier suspected.

Lichen can be seen growing at the base. I again wonder on live trees how well they handle this, maybe the lichen blocks oxygen from entering the bark. Which I could see as a good and bad thing. As oxygen breaks down organic matter but at the same time living things need it as a building block of life.

I take pictures with a special camera. Its a Mirrorless DSLR that has been modified by Life Pixel to see light in other wavelengths. This allows my camera to see light in the Infrared [IR] around 1300 NM wavelength, through the visual spectrum and into the Ultraviolet A and B wavelengths roughly into the 300 NM wavelength.

I carry many filters on me to make the photos you see in my blog, these filters screw on my lens and help me isolate certain wavelengths for certain scenes. These filters can be IR / UV pass-through filters to assist me get a natural photo taking out the UV and IR light. Or I may use a Infrared pass-through filter capture just IR light. I can do the same with IR light as well, though I need some better filters which they can cost a few hundred dollars for true Ultraviolet pass through filters. So for right now I have B + W 403 bandpass filters that still allow some IR light in, due to their cheaper material.

There are also exotic glasses made of sapphire and germanium I am open to working with to replace my silica glass hot mirror with a material that allows even longer wavelengths of infrared to enter my cameras sensor. Special sensors, lenses and filters of that material would be needed as well, so it would be a big project but one that may give some even more unique photography results.

Those might be turkeytail mushrooms. Worth a bit of research if you've got time, as they're very powerful medicinal mushrooms. 

Many mushrooms are decomposers, which would imply that the tree is either dead or soon to be dead. Mushrooms will help decompose dead wood, as they're the most efficient living creatures at that job. They help dead material turn into bioavaiable nutrients, making them a very important part of the nutrient cycle and soil building.  

In forests, they are particularly helpful, as some will form relationships with the trees and help gather nutrients from the soil for the trees to use. They can produce water when the tree needs, and mushrooms actually breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, like people. Trees inhale the carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Paul Stamets says that on one meter of tree root, there can be a kilometer of fungal mycelium.

@nateonsteemit yeah I think they may be turkey tails. We have seen some that look like that on the property so it's very possible. Paul Stamets is the man, I heard him on Joe Rogan. And yeah they seem to complete the decomposition cycle and bring everything back to earth in the ground.

You always find those big colonies... So cool :)

It wouldn't be some symbiosis? I remember from school that mushrooms growing in soil near some trees give them nutrients.. and the trees give something back too. But if it's the same with the ones growing from bark... not sure..

Hah yeah they just cover the dead wood usually, we got alot of them in the South it would seem.

Yeah I think they do have some find of mutual relationship, though I do not know exactly how each are helping each other. The mushrooms in the soil are breaking and decomposing material like @	nateonsteemit said so the plants roots can then make use of it. So yeah makes sense.

Alot going on we do not fully understand yet.
