I've spent a fair amount of time thinking about this exact thing too. I wrote a post about it from the vantage point of the newbie. In my post, I take the perspective of learning how the crypto stuff works from the vantage of earning money, not spending it. I think it's easier for people to get motivated to figure it out, once they've earned some Steem or Bitcoin. At least that's how it was for me, so I bet there are a lot of people who are risk averse, especially when it comes to their own money. Andreas Antonopoulos, a leading bitcoin expert always gives people some Bitcoin, and teaches them how to do it in the process.
