Bogs are the primary producers of peat. As soil rises like dough and peat moss starts decaying from the bottom, it turns into peat. Estonias bogs have a peat thickness around 3~6 meters thick. The deepest layers are found near Suur-Munamägi in Southern-Estonia with a thickness of about 17 meters.

Our mires hold about 1600 tons of peat per capita. Peat is used in the energetic industry, but it's also exported and used in other industries, even cosmetics.
The most famous bogs are Lahemaa and Viru bogs in the north and Soomaa and Matsalu in the south.

Matsalu National bog is an important feeding and resting place for migratory birds passing through Estonia. 
Estonia has a landscape carved and designed by the ice cover during the ice age. Uneven melting of the ice produced many hillocks that hold small lakes. These lakes form bogs over time.

Bog are usually associated with supernatural events in local folklore. It's hard to miss this as these places look like straight from a fairytale yet are dangerous to wander as the ground can easily give away.
