Fish & Potato Salad (Fish & Chips Croatian Style)

Friday is traditionally "Fish on the menu day" in Croatia and in many other Christian countries, this is one of the traditions that I wish to continue here in Australia too. Many people tell me that this used to be a common tradition here in Australia too and that it has died out over the years.

In Croatia there is no classic "Fish and Chips" as a national recipe, but we do have fish with potato salad. Which could be said "Fish and Chips Croatian Style".

Unlike in Australia , the fish is prepared with flour and polenta, not in beer batter.

Recipe with photos

Ingredients

6 filletts of boneless fish (I uses Basa this time)
6 tablespoons of flour
6 tablespoons of polenta
1 tablespoon of paprika
1 teaspoon of Vegeta
1/2 teaspoon of salt
pinch of pepper
cooking oil

Step 1
First place your fish fillets onto paper hand towels and cover them with paper hand towels, so that the paper can draw out all the extra fluids/water out of the fillets.
Many fish stores and sellers put fish into water to make them heavier, this way you get all the extra water out of the fish.
Leave like this for 10 to 15 minutes, that is all it takes for the towels to absorb all the extra water.

Note: this also helps to prevent hot oil splattering out when frying the fish.

Gel all your herbs and spices and mix them all together.

Place your fillets into the flour and herbs mix, cover on both sides.

Step 3
Place into frying pan with preheated cooking oil, pry on a low flame until golden brown on both sides

Croatian style potatoe salad

Ingredients
8 or 9 potatoes
1 large onion
Vinegar (add a little and mix, then add to your liking after the first taste test.
salt (just lightly salt and mix)

Step 1

Boil your potatoes in salted water, then peel and slice

Step 2
Slice up your onion 
and mix all together (tumble them do not mix in a way that mashes the potatoes)
adding vinegar to your liking and then very lightly salt!

There we have what could be called the Croatian version of "Fish and Chips".
