I have often spent time over the years trying to get people interested in finding out who they are and what that means for them. Mostly, I have failed at this. I think there are two reasons for my failure. Firstly, it seems quite difficult to spend time working out one's own way rather than just following what everyone else does and secondly, people are lazy. http://i.imgur.com/QjTQPEV.jpg ***
Follow the hive
*** Before getting riled up about me calling people lazy, hear me out a little. We all live in various cultures that apply pressures on us and teach us a whole range of things. Our parents and peers are also part of this community, as is our education system. Our entire localized experience is built upon a platform of reinforcing ideology, culture. This has an effect on us in many ways and directs us to desire certain outcomes from life and nudges our references to all be similarly aligned to those around us. the problem is that culture itself is largely insensitive to the individuals within it and what it directs people to want, may not be suitable for everyone. This can be seen in schooling systems quite easily where it is designed to favor certain types of students who already possess certain skills or have the drive to force through. In general, schooling systems search for the mathematical and scientific types and train everyone else to a level where they can be employees. But, those that do not fit into this model are generally left by the wayside by the school as being the wrong type of student. Most societies and therefore parents, encourage children to aim for well paying jobs as most societies highly value wealth creation and return on investments. But, by definition, high paying jobs are scarce and often narrow in field. ***
Job satisfaction
*** This means a lot of people have the expectation that in order to be successful in life, one must have a decent job in one of these areas as that is how to acquire all of the other desires that society indicates are the trappings of success. But, most people never take an objective view of themselves to see if these suggested pathways are the ones most suited for them as an individual. This can mean that there are possibly many people doing the 'wrong job'. You have probably met many of them. But, since they are aiming for a culturally dictated position, they do not know necessarily know that they are on the wrong path. What is the right path, I don't know and that is my point, it must be discovered by the individual and based upon the individual's own understanding of themselves. And this is where the laziness comes into it as most people are so busy doing what they have been told to do, they do not have time to find out what they should do for themselves. ***
Lazy follower
***
http://i.imgur.com/YPKLzpN.jpg
You may say that this doesn't sound like laziness and in some way, you'd be right but, I see the majority of people taking zero steps towards personal discovery while having the time to spend being entertained by consumption habits. This is laziness in my opinion as they are leaving the work of personal responsibility and decision making up to the group to take care of. And most inside the group are working in the same manner which means most are leaving the direction of the group up to those willing to take a leadership position. Governments and corporations take the lead here and happen to also be the ones that are selling and benefiting from the increasing sales of consumption products. So, in my opinion, for one to really be satisfied in what one does, they would have to ensure that what one does is in line with who one is. No corporation nor government care who individuals are as long as the mob are paying to consume and therefore tax to keep the cycle running. ***
To die, to sleep, to work
*** I have the idea that I want to die working, die doing what I love and what I love is actually not anything in particular it is more of a personal value. What I love is helping people find out what they love and although rarer than failure, I have been somewhat successful at this and hopefully, I am improving myself to help others and in so doing, helping myself. I aim for a win/win scenario. Now, this bee I found in the head of a sunflower died working too. I can't look into the mind of a bee but, I am guessing it wasn't out of self-awareness that it chose to do exactly what its community demanded it do. It likely did not have much choice in the matter at all and was guided almost purely by biological instinct and socialization. Did it die happy? Content? Sad? Likely, it had very few emotions passed instinctual response and therefore did not care whether or not it ever achieved anything at all unique. Humans however socially constructed, still largely require some kind of higher meaning in which to feel life satisfaction but, most do what the hive says to do. We are all going to die. I see that while I am alive, it is my job to find out who I am, and what I love. With that discovery, I'd die happy. Taraz [ a Steemit original ] http://i.imgur.com/pAcUAzX.png

I appreciated this picture and article. As a cancer survivor I did not know really who I was or what I was looking for until I got sick. I made me realize life is short...like a blink...and you have to not question just live to the max. Love deeply, show tons of gratitude for what you have and not focus on what you don't have. Basically make the most of each second of every single day. So when you die you will die happy and fullfilled.

For me, living is questioning as it is only then that the love can become unconditional I think. Situations that force a look at mortality are the best ones to evoke a growth mindset as time becomes precious.

Isn't any 'higher meaning' also 'socially constructed" and just a tool for the hive to justify tax making behavior? According to Yuval Harari interpretation of Big History, if you gather more than five hundred homo sapiens, a small elite will emerge. They will come up with some fiction as gods or nations to justify their decisions. This way a higher meaning will become part of reality...

Depends on the source doesn't it? Some derive their meaning from the overarching values of the group, some look within and discover what lays there.

We're so interactive species since we're born I'm not sure there is any "within". Maybe it's also a twisted social construct? Where do you learn how to distinguish what I'm and what I'm not? How you know what to do to "be yourself'? Maybe I'm pushing it... I guess that's a big and different subject :)
