Just really wanted to have a rant this morning pre coffee #2 about product buying — I realise it goes deep with people and it’s as precious a topic as religion, careers and education but it’s something that needs to be talked about because we spend so much money on garbage.

Maybe it’s a by-product of lack of knowledge that we get suckered into the whole slight of digital marketing magic hands and the aggressive upset, maybe they just know how to craft on top of our emotive buying — whatever the process at the end of the day we need to become more informed.

Making better choices for me is something that I’m still learning about everyday — that’s part of it is to be human. Taking short cuts doesn’t help anyone any especially myself when I buy things that don’t perform or do the job properly, it’s a short term low budget solution to a long term need.

As part of my day to day I’m always iterating everything I do -- it’s fair too easy to be apathetic in my thinking and it actually mentally exhausts me just cycling around and around on something. 

Take my computer, it’s now seven years old — I consider this a win for the amount of usage I’ve had out of it for the money I paid for it — it’s returned me 10x the amount of money I spent on it as it enabled me to work and play, to communicate, to laugh and to vanish from the world at times too! :)

Right now it’s struggling, it’s getting old, it’s showing it’s age — operating systems, games, encoding video tasks it’s like sending out a retired father out to the local recycling centre to break down equipment for psu’s and motherboards.  I need another one.

But then I’m left thinking, ok, no problem I save and I make an informed choice on the next one, here are some of the steps I go through. .

- legacy of the company, how long have they been around
- is this v1 of the product?
- does it do everything I need?
- does it have good build quality (if a rucksack is it double stitched)
- what do other people I trust say about it.
- does it try to do too much.
- has it been really field tested in the real world.
- is it a WANT or a NEED
- what are the pros and cons of owning the product

And that’s just a few things that go through my mind, I have many many more I’m sure. .. 

.. . of course it still leaves me with the biggest problem, what do I do with this one once I get a new one, do I sell it, who too, who would want this? Can I recycle it, where can I send it? Who buys these things anyway? Does it still hold any value? It must have some value right?

It’s the one big problem about having ‘stuff’ is often times the 360 loop is rarely often closed, I never get to see the next stage, where do I take it, do I take it to a place that’s just gonna crush and smash or is there things that can be taken apart and used from this to give life to something else?

What happens when I’m gone, all this stuff will be like a big memory footprint of my time here on planet earth — now multiple that by the billions of people on planet earth and you can see we have a big problem to deal with that at the moment just keeps getting pushed into someone else’s back yard on planet earth.

i’ll accept that I’m part of the problem — I’d just love to have some better solutions of how to mitigate my consumption patterns, maybe the blockchain of things will help us all eh?
