<hr>“Eventually” Can Take a Long Time

by Terry Brock for DSound & Steemit

The state of crypto today

We are seeing volatility as never before in the cryptocurrency market. It can be particularly unnerving when you have coins that are losing value. I feel your pain, my fellow Steemians. We say we need to HODL, hold on for dear life. What we're saying there is that "eventually" we would be able to take some profits.

How this applies in other areas

This applies in other areas of life is well. Think of someone who just entered college for the first time. You don't expect to get a high salary job just because you entered your freshman year of undergraduate school. It takes a lot of time, money, and effort to get through school earning a legitimate degree, and then get out to be able to do work. The whole idea is that you will earn more because of the education that you received than you would have if you had not. That is not always the case today, but that is another story.

When does "eventually" arrive?

There has to be some time that we believe that it is reasonable to believe that "eventually" will arrive. If you knew for sure that all cryptocurrencies were going to go to zero this year, you would want to get out. However, most of us in the cryptocurrency space believe that the long-term value of holding crypto currencies is worth enduring of the temporary pain.

How to know when to"do it now!" — and when drop it

There's another side of the “eventually” issue. This applies to doing what we know we need to do and we keep putting it off. Procrastination can be a devilishly alluring option. How do you know when you need to do something immediately versus waiting for a better time?

I like the way the legendary insurance multi-millionaire W. Clement Stone made popular his phrase that brought results for himself and for many others. He was famous for practicing and putting the words around him that said "Do it now!" Sometimes that urgency is exactly what is needed to get the right thing done at the right time.

Perhaps you are like me and you have found that sometimes the best decision is to do something immediately rather than waiting around for it. Something about the early bird getting the worm might applies here.

Determine when "eventually" never will be

You also have to determine when something will never happened no matter what. This usually happens when you were trusting in someone else to do a particular task and you have found over and over that they are not reliable. Sometimes it's best to understand that "eventually" is not going to happen ever with this person. This takes wisdom and judgment. There are no easy answers and it usually comes only from experience.

A great way to gain from the experience of others

However, you can gain a lot of experience from others by reading good quality books. The world didn't start yesterday. Many very smart people who have gone before us and have recorded their experiences and their ideas in the books that we can read today for very little money or for free. Make it your practice in life to learn from the wisdom of others on when something is worth doing now versus waiting versus dumping it immediately.

Yes,"eventually" can take a long time. I don't have any hard and fast rules I can give you, but I can tell you that good things in life often take time. Just remember that we don't have forever. I like the way that Ben Franklin put it,"You may delay, but time will not."

What do you think? How do you discern between something to stay with for the long term, versus something that you need to abandon.? how do you make your decisions on what to hang onto and what to let go? As Kenny Rogers asked in his song the gambler, how do you know when to hold 'em and how do you know when to fold 'em?

Thank you for listening and I look forward to hearing your comments.

All the best,

Terry
