<p>I started this series of autobiographical comics with those that happened in my soviet childhood. </p>
<p><strong>PIONEER TIE. Pain and bravery.</strong></p>
<p>As you may know, becoming a member of pioneer organization in USSR for school kids was voluntary/mandatory, as we liked to joke. Which means, it was KIND OF up to you, but strongly recommended. :D Honestly, I don't remember even anyone ever asking my opinion on this topic. </p>
<p>In the third grade, once you 8-9 y.o., you participate the<strong> ceremony</strong> <strong>of becoming a pioneer.</strong> </p>
<p>We were standing on the stage and a high-school girl was greeting us with proud/bored face. During the national anthem of Soviet Union she handed us gifts (some books) and started tying the red silk pioneer ties on our necks. Some of my long hair went right to the knot while she was trying to make it but I had to pretend to be proud while enduring sharp pain. This is my first memory about pioneer tie.</p>

<p><strong>My dad</strong> always hated the totalitarianism we had, especially the absurd parts of it. But he never had guts to protest openly. The tie had to be tied in such special way, that the knot would look like a square. To be honest, I was pioneer for 3 years and never actually learned to do it. So one morning before going to school I asked him to help me with it. He became annoyed and said "Throw it the fuck away!". My mom who heard it remarked "If you are so brave, go to the school and tell it to them". I still don't know how to do it!</p>

<p>P.S. That's my mom and I going to second grade. :) You can see the Lenin star on my chest. It is because before becoming a pioneer you had to be "oktyabryonok" ("a child of October") wearing little star with baby Lenin portrait. Normally we kids lost them on the floor somewhere in the house and everyone stepped on the sharp corners of the star with bare feet! </p>

Thank you so much for your words! Instead we thought of USA as a magical unreal place where is impossible to go and which exists in movies. In fact my first time in the US (even though it happened recently, more than 20 yeas after USSR collapsed) I did feel like in a movie :) Little things which americans are used to, were remarkable to me. For example, when woman who was selling snacks called me ma'am :) Or those diners you have with music machines. Damn, actually I left and never tried one!

Oh my, this brought back so many flashbacks from my own childhood!.. I think I became a pioneer the same year as you. Was super-proud of that fact, haha! :D Never made it up to KOMSOMOL – the Soviet Union ceased to exist before I became eligible. Today it feels like we grew up on a different planet. Especially when I try to tell stories like the one you posted to my Swedish friends. Do you get this feeling too, maybe?

I never made to Komsomol either for the same reason :D Not that I really wanted.. :) Yeah, I feel something like that. Also I have my childhood nostalgia, which has nothing to do with nostalgia for USSR, that some people have now.. :) Did you grow up in Russia?
