Within 1 week, I will officially have been on Steemit for a 19 moons
This year has been nothing short of an adventure.
I have made connections from people all over the world, have been able to grow from a red fish to a minnow & built my steem power P.A.L project by @minnowsupport, plus shared tons of material regarding soft skills.
But want to know something?
Steemit has a dark side.
It is one of the many platforms that can bring out the crazies.
You probably have seen it yourself.
The more viral a blog post gets, the more love AND hate it gets.
Polarization 101.
Seen it happen to so many people in our sphere.
Heck, one of them had such a polarizing blog post that he ended up getting down votes for a week.
So needless to say, there are tons of polarizing words, thoughts & phrases on this platform.
But form my experience, I noticed one phrase that was VERY polarizing.
'And what is that?'
### Emotional Intelligence.
'Wait really? That word is polarizing??'
Yep, very.
One group loves the blog posts regarding emotional intelligence because they feel like it resonates with them.
The other group hates the blog posts regarding emotional intelligence & thinks its' a fake terminology designed to control people.
Therefore, it's a very black or white topic.
But why the polarization?
Shouldn't everyone want to be emotionally intelligent?
Using your mind & emotions to work in harmony to make rational decisions seems like a no brainer.
But in many cases, it is not seen as that by the haters.
They view emotional intelligence incorrectly.
The common misunderstanding about emotional intelligence is that it's when you make emotional decisions.
Another reason for the polarization is because EQ cannot be measured, only IQ can.
So they say EQ is nonsense & IQ is the main thing to focus on.
I'm going to challenge that thought pattern for a second.
IQ is great....for measuring your critical thinking capabilities.
But if you feel as though your whole intellect is determined solely by critical thinking abilities, then you have a fixed mindset.
True intellect is an umbrella consisting of:
Critical thinking
Creative thinking
Empathy
Social skills
Curiosity
Mental Toughness
Therefore, IQ represents critical thinking.
EQ represents empathy.
'What makes empathy so crucial?'
Empathy is a sign of intellect in terms of dealing with others & yourself.
When it comes to others, the empathetic person will build stronger social bonds.
When it comes to yourself, you will be able to forgive past mistakes & recondition your perception towards your failures.
But I do agree, EQ cannot be measured with an exam.
So?
It can be measured with your own awareness.
Use self awareness, honesty & self correction to analyze how well you make rational decisions for your lifestyle when faced with a flurry of emotions. Also, analyze how well you can regulate destructive emotions in productive fuel.
Ruling off an entire subject because it cannot be measured with an exam is a silly notion.
That is also one of the main reasons that people lose touch with their intuition. They just want to quantify it with a man made test.
Doesn't work like that in all facets of life.
The world isn't so black & white, rather it is gray.
Learn to adjust & adapt.
At the end of the day, IQ & EQ both have a place in your world.
Critical thinking is vital & will allow you to not be a clown who is impulsive.
But understand that a lot of your day to day decisions are based off your emotions, not solely your logic.
And using emotional intelligence, to use your mind to analyze the emotions to make rational decisions, rather than an impulsive one is a crucial skill set to:
Getting over rock bottom
Building solid relationships
Turning anxiety into excitement
and much more
