From my silver long stack - 1877 Mexico 8 Reales Chinese Merchant Notches "chop marks" - Shipwreck Coin

The well-travelled coin: Mexico-China-Mexico-bottom of the Atlantic-Spain. Nicely pitted with 3 Imperial China "chopmarks"

Chop marks on Mexican coins are Chinese characters stamped onto coins by Chinese merchants in order to validate the weight, authenticity and silver content of the coin. The pitting/staining on this coin indicates prolonged stay and contact with the various elements in the sea. 

The coin was reportedly found in the sea by Mexican pearl divers in the early 1900's then traded to Spanish sailors which sold/exchanged it in Spain. I bought the coin from the original purchaser about 7 years ago.  The coins exact history in relation what vessel sank is un-known. Even though it may sound like the coin is worth a lot - its not, but it's got a wonderful storey and which is why it will stay in my Silver Long Stack(long stack means I will sell it only before I pass or give it to the kids)

The coins of Mexican "8Reales" with the simple fact of having the seal of Chinese circulation, completely lose their numismatic value in Mexico, in case of being minted the currency in a State of the Mexican republic whose date of coinage is rare or a reamer who coined few coins.

(Example: J.S is the acronym of the reamer in the coin of 8Reales of the photo)

The nice thing about old coins is every year they get older. Every year that goes by increases the possibility for someone to lose one and with each lost coin comes into play more scarcity. Like they say -

The Spanish had lots of shipwrecks - I think Spanish and then Mexican coins are the absolute easiest coins to buy "shipwreck" - do a search on ebay and you can get one too
