Vanilla cuttings
Decided to start a couple of cuttings from my vanilla tahitensis orchid to increase my little crop after a couple of my old vanilla planifolia had died. The online vendor doesn't seem to be in business anymore so it's a good excuse to try my hand at propagating my vanillas.

The tahitenis species is thought to be a cross between the v. planifolia and v. odorata. Originally from central America it made its way across the Pacific in the 1800s. Doesn't seem as easy to find as the planifolia. If I'm lucky and can find a big enough space in the RV I might eventually have them blossom (my first vanilla took 3 years to produce 3 blossom and no pods unfortunately) but the pale greenish white flowers were pretty.

My "mother" plant that I've had for a bit over a year.

Orchid pot filled with mix and ready to go. The double pot set up with the slotted interior pot allows for good air flow, plus l have 3 little usb-powered muffin fans to circulate the air. Humid environment + stagnant air = mold problems.
Course terrestrial orchid mix and pots from rePotme. Soaked the pot in hot water to make sure the mix was thoroughly moist.

Fresh cutting from the mother vanilla using a clean scalpel. I've read that the sap from the vanilla is irritating so I made sure to keep the cut end away from me. Nice to have aerial roots already.

Cutting dipped in rooting hormone and into the pot. Now into the planter with a heat pad and plastic tent to make a (not in the tropics) warm and humid home for the cuttings.

Now 'hurry up and wait' and hopefully all the cuttings will root successfully and grow. It's times like this that make me wish I had a house somewhere with a nice warm year-round greenhouse and garden. Will I produce my own crop of vanilla pods?? Not very likely but stay tuned.

I love orchids in general but I have never tried a vanilla one...
Is it difficult to care?

Not difficult. They can grow to be many feet if you give them the room and something to climb on (the aerial roots can provide their nutritional needs once established). Flowers take a few years and look like small cattyleas, not that glamorous.
