When did you last check your backup email addresses, 2FA keys and more?

We all know the importance of using 2FA, and we all know how important it is to store the keys or the QR code needed to restore the 2FA in case our phone is broken or something else. But, it is also good to check from time to time that it actually works and that you have all the codes needed to restore it in case of trouble.

But, today I woke up and got an email from Google telling me that there had been some suspicious activity on an email account of mine. It is an account I almost never use, but it is logged in on my computer. Now, that was kind of scary, but luckily, no big harm was done.

But, I was forced to log in over again on my device, and that is when I got into trouble.

## The backup email address didn't work!
As Google told me to log into the account again, they wanted me to confirm that I was really me by typing the last password, and then they wanted to send me an email to my "backup" email address. Now, since I don't really ever use the email address, I haven't added a phone number as a backup to it, so the backup email address was the only option.

Great stuff, I thought, and I went to check the backup email. But, then came the shock! The site has been removed, and the webmail service has simply stopped working and hasn't existed (for a while). Now, that is causing trouble for me!

Luckily, Google also understood that there wasn't a big problem, so I am now allowed to enter the email without using the secondary email, but it felt quite scary for a moment or two.

## Secondary email has been changed, phone number added
Since then I have changed the secondary email to one that is actually working and I have also added a phone number. As a result, I will be better prepared if such trouble should ever arise in the future!

Now, I know this is things we all know - but if might be wise from time to time to do a check on your own security, your backups, your secondary email addresses, your 2FA backup codes and more. Because, if the day of trouble suddenly shows up, you will feel much better if everything is working the way it should and you have all needed codes at hand!
