<div class=pull-left><b><center>Paradebeispiel des Wiener Historismus.</center></b><p></p> Der  griechische Sonnengott <i>Helios</i>,  Symbol des  belebenden Elementes in der Natur, bekrönt die Kuppel des <b>Naturhistorischen Museums Wien</b> (NHM Wien).  Sein Pendant ist <i>Pallas Athene</i>, die Göttin der Kunst, die  auf dem Gewölbe des  gegenüberliegenden <i> Kunsthistorischen Museums</i> thront. Spiegelbildlich angelegt  und von gleicher Dimension  bringen die  beiden Museen  die   Gleichgewichtung von Natur und Kunst zum Ausdruck.<p></p></div>

</center></b><p></p>The Greek sun god <i>Helios</i>, symbol of the invigorating element in nature, crowns the dome of the <b>Natural History Museum Vienna</b> (NHM Vienna). His counterpart is <i>Pallas Athena</i>, the goddess of art, who sits enthroned opposite on the vault of the <i>Kunsthistorisches Museum</i>.  The equal importance of nature and art is expressed by the symmetrical design and the same dimensions of the two museums. <p></p></div>

<div class=pull-left>Die beiden Museumsbauten an der <i>Wiener Ringstraße</i>  waren  ursprünglich Teil des  geplanten <i>Kaiserforums</i>. Nach dem Vorbild römischer Imperatoren  sollte ein groß angelegtes Forum um das  bisher stückhaft gewachsene Hofburg-Ensemble  entstehen.  Realisiert wurden allerdings nur die beiden Hofmuseen und die <i>Neue Burg</i>.<p></p></div>

<div class=pull-right>The two museum buildings on Vienna's <i>Ringstraße </i>were originally part of the planned <i>Kaiserforum</i> (Imperial Forum). Following the example of Roman emperors, a large-scale forum was to be created around the Hofburg ensemble, which had grown in pieces to date. However, only the two court museums and the<i> Neue Burg</i> were realized.<p></p></div>

<div class=pull-left> Im Auftrag von <i>Kaiser Franz Joseph I.</i> (1830-1916) wurden die beiden Museen  von den  Architekten <b>Carl Hasenauer</b> und  <b>Gottfried Semper</b> im Stil des <b>Historismus</b>  geplant. Bei diesem Baustil, der prägend für die Architektur der  <i>Wiener Ringstraße</i> war,  nahm man  historische Bauformen in idealisierter Weise zum Vorbild  und passte sie den technischen und funktionalen Anforderungen der Gegenwart an. Die Idee von Architektur als  Gesamtkunstwerk war für den <i>Historismus</i> prägend.  Jedes einzelne Bauwerk wurde als Kunstwerk aufgefasst, Skulptur und Malerei wurden Bestandteile der Architektur.  <p></p></div>

<div class=pull-right>The two museums were commissioned by <i>Emperor Franz Joseph I</i> (1830-1916) and designed by the architects <b>Carl Hasenauer</b> and <b>Gottfried Semper</b> in the style of <b>Historism</b>. In this architectural style, which had a formative influence on the architecture of the Vienna's <i>Ringstraße</i>, historical building forms were taken as an ideal model and adapted to the technical and functional requirements of the present.  The idea of architecture as a "Gesamtkunstwerk"  was formative of Historicism. Every single building was seen as a work of art, sculpture and painting became components of the architecture.<p></p></div>

<div class=pull-left>1871 erfolgte der  Spatenstich für das Naturhistorische Museum, zehn Jahre später war das Gebäude außen fertiggestellt.  Der Bau misst rund 170 mal 70 Meter. Die Arbeits- und Schauräume sind um zwei große Innenhöfe gruppiert.  Im August 1889 wurde das Museum feierlich eröffnet. <p></p></div>

<div class=pull-right>The ground-breaking ceremony for the Natural History Museum took place in 1871, and ten years later the exterior of the building was completed. The building measures around 170 by 70 meters. The work and show rooms are grouped around two large inner courtyards. The museum was opened in August 1889.<p></p></div>

<div class=pull-left> Während <i>Gottfried Semper</i> vor allem für die äußere Gestaltung  des Museums verantwortlich zeichnete, lag die Ausführung der Innenausstattung weitgehend in den Händen des Hofarchitekten <i>Carl  Hasenauer</i>. In der imposanten Eingangshalle  gibt eine Öffnung in der reich dekorierten Decke den Blick in die Kuppel bis in etwa 40 Meter Höhe frei. Die Porträts rund um  die Öffnung stellen  bedeutende  Persönlichkeiten aus  der   Sammlungsgeschichte dar. <p></p></div>

<div class=pull-right>While <i>Gottfried Semper</i> was primarily responsible for the exterior design of the museum, the execution of the interior decoration was largely in the hands of the court architect <i>Carl Hasenauer</i>. In the impressive entrance hall, an opening in the richly decorated ceiling provides a view into the dome up to a height of about 40 meters. The portraits around the opening represent important personalities from the history of the collection.<p></p></div>
