This post has a variety of species of the Skipper Butterfly.  When I lost over 500 of my photos, all of my Skippers were among the ones lost.  I had so many different species and the flowers they were feeding on were so fresh.  The photos I miss the most are the mating pair, a rare blue checkered skipper, and the two that were perched on one of my fingers.  Luckily, I was able to get some last minute photos of a few of them before they were gone.

There are approximately 3,500 species of Skipper Butterflies and they are found all over the world.  And there are approximately 300 species in North America.  Skippers resemble a combination of moths and butterflies.

They are a dull dark color and have a large head, a hairy stout body, hooked antennae and very short wings.  They resemble moths more than they do butterflies and are so difficult to identify because many species look so much alike.  I made many attempts to identify these species, but I was not positive.  That is why I listed these as a variety of Skipper butterflies.

It is so much fun watching them dart so fast and skip from one flower to another.  Adults mainly drink nectar, but also feed on grasses, shrubs, trees.  Depending on the species, breeding season is from late spring through fall.

Females lay dozens to hundreds of eggs, one at a time on a leaf, branch or small plant; usually on or near the plants they feed on.  Their caterpillars feed on the leaves of shrubs and trees; they also feed on grasses.

<center>Predators for adult Skippers are orb-weaver spiders, crab spiders and mantids.  Skippers only live up to one year or less.</center>
