Remember Goliad! - video

<div class="text-justify">In 1836 American settlers in Texas went to war with Mexico to obtain independence.  Greatly outnumbered and outgunned the Texians, as they were known then, fought hard, but they lacked the strength to take on the Mexican army in a head to head battle. </div>

<div class="text-justify">On March 6th Mexican General Santa Anna captured the garrison at the Alamo. </div>


<div class="text-justify">The commander of the Texian army, Sam Houston, ordered the garrison at Goliad under the command of Colonel James Fannin to abandon the fortress.  Fannin led his men from the fortress, but were engaged and surrounded near Coleto Creek by a branch of the Mexican Army led by General José de Urrea.  At first the Texians held off the Mexican Army, but lacking supplies and water they surrendered on the morning of March 20th.</div>

<div class="text-justify">The prisoners were taken to the Presidio La Bahia where General Santa Ana sent word that the prisoners were to be executed as an example to the other rebels. </div>
<br>

<div class="text-justify">On Palm Sunday, March 27, 1836, the Texians were forced to leave the Presidio, they had been told many different reasons for leaving the Presidio so they were unaware of the plans for their execution. As they were marched through Goliad, the guard turned and fired at them at close range. Those who were not killed were chased down and brutally killed with gunfire and bayonet; only 28 men escaped the firing squad to report what had happened.</div>

<div class="text-justify">General Sam Houston  continued a campaign of retreat, unwilling to risk his army against the superior forces of Santa Anna until he had favorable conditions. Finally he found the chance he was looking for and engaged the Mexicans at the battle of San Jacinto.</div>

<div class="text-justify">His troops charged into battle with the cry,  "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!"</div>

It was definitely an ugly mess.  I was at ths Presidio reading about the wounds and it was horrible.  If they didn't die soon after the shot or bayonet stabbing, they would suffer far worse.  

It was an ugly time for sure.

I'm not sure when I first heard the term, but I know I knew it in high school.  Maybe it's because I grew up in Oklahoma and our history is tied so deeply into Texas'.  I do know I didn't know about Goliad until I started studying Texas history when we started traveling.  I just love how traveling opens one's mind.

I consider myself a history buff and I love learning new things in our history that I had not previously known about.  To know this happened and this was not taught in school, whereas the Alamo was saddens me a bit.  It shows us how as time goes on we always seem to lose part of the story.

Very much so.  I was stunned when I learned of Goliad.  I love learning about history and would love to time travel back to see things unfold as they had.  Unfortunately,  this isnt something we are able to do.  Hence why we have to be vigilant and always teach the true history; evwn when its ugly.
