Every autumn, my wife and I visit Chernivtsi. For not to miss the international poetry festival Meridian Czernowitz. Where poets and writers from Ukraine and the world are going.
Performances of poets and presentations of books are held throughout the city. At times, two events occur simultaneously, so you need to choose what matter. The venue is: the Philharmonic, theater, post office, cultural center, synagogue, the city square, as well as many cozy cafes. But my favorite place is Chernivtsi University.

Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University is one of the oldest classical universities in Ukraine. Located in a magnificent building of modern Chernivtsi, a complex built in the years 1864-1882 as the residence of the Bukovinian metropolitans on the project of the famous Czech architect Josif Glavka. The works of interiors were made by Viennese artists K. Iobstrom, I. Klein, Czechian C. Svoboda, Bukovinian E. Buchevsky and E. Maksimovich. The style of buildings is eclectic with the dominant motive of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture.
In 1868 a question was raised in the Bukovyna Diet about the founding of a law academy in Chernivtsi. And in 1872, the deputy of the region, Dr. Konstantin Tomashchuk, at a meeting on November 28, 1872, advanced and substantiated the proposal to establish a university in Chernivtsi.
On March 31, 1875, the Chernivtsi University was founded by the decree of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef, including the theological Greek-Orthodox faculty - the only Orthodox faculty in the Austrian Empire.

He had different names: the name of Franz Josephs in 1875-1918, the Universitatea Regele Carol I din Cernăuţi (1919-1940) and the Chernivtsi State University after 1940. Since 1989 Chernivtsi University has been given the name of Yuri Fedkovich.

After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, the University until 1940 was considered a Romanian higher educational establishment.
In 1940, after the entry of Northern Bukovina into the Ukrainian SSR, the University was reorganized into a state higher educational institution with a Ukrainian language of instruction. In 1989, the University was named after the famous Bukovinian writer Yuri Fedkovych.
