#### 강남은 서울이 아니었다.

1962년까지 강남은 서울이 아니었다. 
1963년 1월 1일 서울시 행정구역이 바뀌며 새로운 땅이 서울로 들어왔다. 
그때 들어온 땅은 '서울' 보다 컸다.

268제곱킬로미터였던 서울의 면적은 
596.5제곱킬로미터로 두 배 넘게 늘어났다.

지금 그곳은
중랑구, 도봉구, 노원구, 강서구, 양천구, 구로구, 금천구, 관악구, 강남구, 서초구, 송파구, 강동구이다.

당시 서울은 미어터졌고,
(1966년 이호철 작가가 동아일보에 <서울은 만원이다>를 연재하기도 했다)

새로 편입된 곳들은 모두 농촌이었다.
대부분 채소밭과 과수원으로 개간되었는데,
서울(강북)에 채소와 과일을 공급하기 위해서였다.

#### 강남은 영동
1917년 건설되었던 한강대교(제1한강교) 다음으로
해방 후 처음으로 제2한강교가 1965년 완공되었다.

지금의 양화대교였다.

서울은 강북과 한강 건너로는 '영등포' 뿐이었다.
강북이란 명칭도 없고, 강남이란 명칭도 없었다.

그곳은 '영동'이라 불리었다.

영등포 동쪽이란 의미였다. 

지금도 강남에선
영동이란 명칭을 어렵지 않게 찾아볼 수 있다.

영동시장, 영동고, 영동중, 영동초, 영동교회, 영동농협...

1970년대 강남이 개발될 때
그 명칭은 '강남 개발'이 아니라
'영동 개발'이었다.
