How long will it take for Banks to Adopt XRP?

### Swift appear to be conceding to their inevitable fate and David Schwartz believes that banks will be incentivized to adopt XRP. 

### Speaking at the TNW Conference 2018, David Schwartz stated that, due to lack of XRP liquidity and the exchanges not being mature enough, Ripple realized that it would have to focus on developing the xCurrent platform first of all, which banks could adopt to replace the outdated Swift and send payments much faster and hassle free.

### Now that we are starting to see more maturity, liquidity and volume in XRP, the banks will be able to draw upon the XRP liquidity pool, once regulatory compliance issues have been cleared-up and they feel the competitive pressure to adopt xRapid technology, because of the extra cost savings using xRapid will offer beyond the xCurrent platform.

### Swift was developed in 1973, it is slow, much more expensive than xCurrent, especially when a problem arises in clearing the Swift payment, as it frequently does, so it is interesting to read a recent paper published by Swift, "Banks and Fintechs: adversaries or partners?", in which Swift appear to concede to David Schwartz's point that banks will feel a competitive pressure to act and they are forced to change their outdated processes, which will soon lead-on to banks utilizing the XRP liquidity pool in addition to the closed xCurrent platform.

### The conclusion we can draw from this paper is that the kind of technology that Ripple has developed will inevitably disrupt the outdated way banks now operate and the banks will become customers of Ripple, and xRapid in particular, as their own customer's behaviour begins to demand that the banks make XRP's time and cost savings accessible to them as an alternative to Swift and banks compete to stay relevant in order to maintain their market share.

### The question of how long Swift will stay relevant remains to be seen.  The next logical step for Swift will be to explore a FinTech solution to the existential threat it faces, but will it be enough?

Xrp might replace swift but I do not get what the xrp token has to do with that, they can replace swift without the token so why have a token in the first place?

Following the recent xRapid pilot test, XRP was shown to offer up to an additional 30% saving over xCurrent. Once banks start to adopt XRP, the others will follow, because XRP would give those adopters a competitive edge. These extra savings make Swift's demise and XRP adoption inevitable. I doubt it will ever be adopted. Replacing a technology or any system at a bank or any large organisation is a big operational pain in the ass. 

Then there is competition from other private blockchain technologies. Xrp is a very targetted solution and they have been partnering with almost every financial entity in both developed and emerging markets so may be some prototype is launched. 

I still doubt that adoption will happen this year. Bitcoin used for cross fx transfers is still limited. As long as bitcoin use case scenario does not increase, and banks dont lose out on business, they can wait and watch. All the hype around btc and crypto is still about price and not examples of how its being used daily to facilitate some form.of transactions.

xCurrent and xRapid is set-up and tested by Ripple on behalf of the banks in order to solve the current cross-border payment system, Swift, which *is* a pain in the ass for banks (Nostro and Vostro accounts) Some of the biggest banks in the world have xCurrent and are already testing XRP. This is an example of a use-case scenario which is happening now and it is one that Bitcoin could not solve for the banks, even with the Lightning Network, because Bitcoin is proof-of-work (subject to mining exploitation) , rather than Ripple's consensus network.

My article isn't about what we need, it's about what the banks need for cross-border payments and that's not Bitcoin. It's also a misconception to say that XRP is centralized, as the XRP asset would continue to exist even if the Ripple company ceased to exist.
