Question originally asked on Musing.io - Click here to see other answers

Yes it is especially right now. We are in a transition where we are going from a mostly centralized world to one where the prospects exist for something to be decentralized. In the meantime, some centralization is required because people cannot handle the total freedom AND responsibility that comes from decentralization. Too many want to turn to big brother when things get rough. The ultimate goal is for total decentralization, something that will take a while to get there. Technology often outpaces people's ability to embrace it. Strange as it sounds, the world is not ready for full blown decentralization just yet.

Blockchain, and dapps are still in their infancy. We've not even figured out the best way to use this new technology yet, never mind seen best-practices emerge. And those best practices will see iterations as we learn from experience, mistakes and the odd success. So fully decentralised dapps might not prove the best solution, 10 or 20 years down the line. By then, we'll have much more powerful AI and machine learning available, and it'll be more accessible than today. Never mind quantum computing and VR (who knows where they'll take us!?). Nobody knows where this crazy ride will take us. But it'll be an exciting ride, for sure!

Things still need to be organised. Not necessarily centralized but still organised. I come at this idea having been involved in #comedyopenmic for a few months now and we're trying to build a decentralized community (and dapp) but things still need to be organised. contest announcements, winners, ideas, development and without having a system to allow every member to vote on everything (which requires a lot of time to build) we rely on people power and we rely on a central authority to help make decisions quicker. Hopefully when Tau comes out, it won't be necessary any more and I can take a breather, but I doubt it.

Whatโs interesting is not necessarily whether or not itโs ok for a dapp to be centralized, but instead is it even possible for a dapp to be decentralized. Every dapp on the market if looked at objectively, is centralized. Token distribution is tough business and no matter how good the intentions are, itโs almost impossible to be truly decentralized (no one owner has more than 51% control of the network). This is why Bitcoin is so important to the crypto space. Itโs the most decentralized. However, EOS is doing some interesting things to create true decentralization. We still need to progress with the governance models and initial distributions among other things before we have true decentralized applications. But, Iโm ok if certain dapps are centralized. Thanks for the question!

resource utilization is also a barrier against true decentralization. some amount of centralization might take away the most expensive part of running a dapp and hence will be a necessity.
