According to a lot of studies and the data millenials are staying at home with the fam in record numbers compared to other recent decades, but I think this can be kind of expected when you look at how insane housing prices and rent has gotten, and the soft job market considering outsourcing, automation, and old people simply not retiring. How the hell can anyone climb a corporate ladder when there are already a bunch of geezers at the top who won't retire until they're 300 years old? I think US culture is kind of unique in the sense that it encourages pushing the kids out of the house before they're financially prepared, European and Asian and even old-school US culture involved the kids staying at home until they were financially ready to buy their first home. I don't know, maybe showing them some data on how others are also staying at home might make them a bit less worried about you staying at home, you're still quite young and for you to even think about investing or trying to build up a capital base gives you a head start on your peers. There are a lot of ways to spend your time, and if you're spending it productively then you can probably find some way to show them that it could eventually pay off. Gl hf bro.

I never knew that millennials are staying home more than other generations. I mean, I've heard anything from you should be working since age 12 to you shouldn't move out till you're married. US culture does push for kids to move out early, but I think it's more of an ego thing. Letting a kid stay till they can buy a house is a pretty sweet thing for a parent to do. Data would be useful for sure, or maybe just explain how culture is changing and stuff ain't cheap. IDK TBH

Yeah, I just double triple checked just to make sure, and there was a big uptick in people your age or older (even into their 30's and 40's lol) moving back in with the parents and that trend held steady over the past decade. I think how they view how things should be depends on how up to date the person talking to you is on current economic and societal trends and what their circle of friends/how they gather info tells them as far as how normal the idea of multi-generational households is these days. Yeah, US culture is pretty independence-minded, but going it on your own before you're really financially established is a kind of false independence, and I liken it to the American car culture in a way, because much like how taking on extreme debt to buy a house or renting an apartment one can't afford gives one a sense of "independence", so too does driving a car give a sense of freedom that not being able to drive gives, but they both tie oneself down to something that's quite expensive to maintain and has a lot of external costs that aren't really thought about too heavily by most. I mean, it depends on their age and your parents probably aren't SO old that they think that a house could be bought on a minimum wage job (which it could be for, say, your grandparents' generation), but they probably grew up with houses being a reasonable multiple of average or median incomes, and gas under a buck a gallon, lol. Shit doesn't really compare to the insanity of asset and commodity prices these days. Maybe just search a couple of articles that back your argument and hand them some printed pages and it'll speak volumes if you let the data stand on its own.

I actually have a bunch of friends who are 18, 19, and 20 and live with their parents. With debt, I haven't ever had it, but I know how it works and I hate it. Even things like having to pay 10$ a month for Photoshop CC is stressful, even though I absolutely love Photoshop. Cars do give freedom, as well as houses, but the cost is a lot, and the balancing act is even more annoying. My parents are older, and grew up in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. They got to experience the golden age of things like cars and housing. My dad even tells me that he's owned something like 40 cars in his life. But that's off of business, not a job.
