I believe onboarding and user retention are two separate issues at the root of it. I read a good break down that explains nearly 60% of new users stop posting after 2 weeks with user retention increasing on accounts that earn higher rewards. These new accounts we cannot retain make up for more than 50% of all Steem accounts. The general idea I have gotten through my own attempts to on board friends is that the platform is just to complicated for the average user to fully understand and use.
