Well you shouldn't worry at least in posts with only a few comments, you'll be visible even if you don't upvote. As you most likely know, we have limited voting power and if someone upvotes their own comments, most are worried if there is any power left to upvote others. If you use Steemit long enough and find plenty of authors you like, you will not have time to upvote yourself when you want to upvote others :)
