Interesting article. I agree wholeheartedly that if you are struggling to find the voice, it is probably the wrong one. Be yourself and let the story flow. It will build organically and be better for it.

As long as you have a beginning point and a destination, the map must remain fluid in between. You must be willing to remove some steps of the journey, go backwards at times, and add side trips and detours that were not planned on, but add to the overall experience. And always, have what Stephen King calls an "ideal reader" to give an honest opinion on your work.

Great points here. I often struggle with the end point. Once I find that, I can usually find my way there somehow (usually not in the way I expected). Without it, I tend to flounder...

It is often easier to start with the end point and work backwards rather than try to wander to it. Just make a loose outline of events that might lead to desired outcome and then work with those.
