Catching Rainbows

She sat with her small bowl at the end of the long driveway.  Rain splattered the pavement with big, round dots. The sun shimmered on small puddles and patiently she sat. Her father walked to the end of the drive. Nearing his little daughter,  he squatted beside her, "Millie? It's raining on you, sweetie." 

The little girl smiled up at her father, "I know, Daddy." 

"Don't you want to come in where it's dry?"
Millie pushed the little bowl out in front of her and shook her damp,  dark curls. 
"I need to catch the rainbow,  Daddy."

"Ohh," he said somberly, "What will you do with a rainbow,  honey?"

"I will give it to Mommy!"

He looked at her little bowl shimmering with drops of rainwater.  

"Millie, I know something you don't know."

"What, Daddy?"

"Mommy has the prettiest rainbow God ever made."

"Where is it, Daddy?"

He took her hand and walked with her to the steps of the house. "Let me show you," he said.

He walked her to the bathroom and picked her up in his arms.  He pointed at the little girl in the mirror. 

"There, Millie," he said pointing at his little daughter in the mirror.

She smiled back at her reflection in the mirror, wide blue eyes sparking.  Her Daddy smiled back at her, touching the tip of her nose.

"You are Mommy's little rainbow. Go give your Mommy a kiss!"
