You're in for a treat with the two expansions! The impacts were much more dramatic in The Witcher 2. Like I mentioned, the two examples you cited are both secondary plots that can be skipped, though they are indeed nicely intertwined with the main plot. The main plot itself is quite linear, though of course there are slightly different ways and order to get to it. In The Witcher 2, you get 5 seconds to make a choice that will lead to a completely different Act 2 (out of 3). That was bold and breathtaking. That said, Blood and Wine does go different ways, closer to 2.

I didn't read what you said about the expansions so I could avoid spoilers . :) I played through Witcher 2.... extremely railroad and linear for the first half of the game, a little more open in the second half. I actually worked with a team that was working on an expansion for Witcher 1 years ago that got cancelled.

That's the charm of The Witcher 2, you have to play it multiple times to see the various different ways it goes. It's much more open ended than 3 and does so in an unassuming manner. Whereas 3 makes it a point to let you know what's a consequence to your actions. I feel 2 was much more daring in this respect. Ah, that must be The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf! It's an expanded version of the first game for consoles, I think.
