Garden Update: Mid-May
![IMG_0407.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRUXygbnYk2qHvw3VvPVkt6ejhVPbqP6uXtAvgiFbPq8D/IMG_0407.jpg)

Well, things are growing extremely fast these days, it is honestly hard to keep up. Lots of growth each night, and the Sun has already scorched my tomatoes and forced a few cool crops to bolt to seed. Working late and waking up later is not helping.

It has been a very busy life here lately and it doesn't seem to be slowing down, but it will be nice to have a helper one day with me out in the garden. For now, things will have to get done when they get done. That is life, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

We have had some wicked storms here today and days of late. This evening's storm was electrified beyond levels I have ever seen before. Lightning dropping every second if not quicker. It was intense and I plan to share some of the captures I got of the skies natural light show.

But for now, I share my garden's progression, as we are several weeks into the warm season and things around here are beginning to pop off.

![IMG_0406.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVss5cpFeh8hbEixjbkzGq72NRgcjFQn46HAwqgaW73A7/IMG_0406.jpg)

One of the biggest Spinach plants I have ever witnessed. Going to flower, but a beauty nonetheless. Massive stem on that plant.

![IMG_0409.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPkCCieQTksFvyiUgvi8jUMPi3Vdshk9cKRtrUocwryDD/IMG_0409.jpg)

Finding the time to get out harvest everything at once can be difficult to locate.

![IMG_0408.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmatGGWS39X51LyzsYCfZMkCQt9k6FoYbRQ4QGA6HwxZcs/IMG_0408.jpg)

Because we sure have a bunch. Maybe a bag or two's worth we want to cut before it goes and bolts.

![IMG_0390.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRp3fgKECiKPw8688uJyeDnkGX8VyPLZ2inQD7CdHk3uw/IMG_0390.jpg)

Incredible the minute sized seed that then germinates into a once tiny sproutling, which then grows to become quite large and worth the effort to consume.

![IMG_0391.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUXaxpZZRPvKfcy4NQfgc3kCPcVfoAWXPt1eCvAR7YWiJ/IMG_0391.jpg)

Chives are flowering on schedule.

![IMG_0392.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmazh68TnCQ9iFyHBtjm1YPGwQMkZ3VB695mmwcC2QexMy/IMG_0392.jpg)

Interesting purple puffballs for flowers. I have already saved seeds from this chive bunch and have begun to spread that form of life to other spots in the garden.

We have used a bunch of fresh chives in our mashed potatoes.

![IMG_0393.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcCo3rMVbqZZ3udZekGM7yMikFYsyU9jVu7XdKVN6U3NZ/IMG_0393.jpg)

The container conglomerate growing steadily. Watched these plants get near destroyed in the heavy downpours this evening...

![IMG_0394.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRbDWPQjqLCQrqVypyfnCUgUJqKnvv3Tcs1zwwd5UqV12/IMG_0394.jpg)

![IMG_0396.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSJ1GUFoaLrpS29XBgtMeGqNhSnvi2dMBZE69bXrCMcaN/IMG_0396.jpg)

This lemon boy tomato has vigorously increased in girth since dropping it in this container. Flowers are already blooming.

![IMG_0395.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVTL15UkSzWz6rey7fMv8VP45MhynqkPhjDxggk14DfsA/IMG_0395.jpg)

I guess the tomato doesn't mind sharing the space with the grapefruit mint and comfry.

![IMG_0397.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXet59sxKT7JUUaDnBwRMYsktEnY6pt7zEqHZnbjzH16h/IMG_0397.jpg)

![IMG_0398.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSSTrw8aH4CeUmpAdSJWYLu5JM8U2nEtCAQVM3M9RbCpx/IMG_0398.jpg)

Shallots must be increasing in size beneath the dirt here. All the greens appear healthy.

![IMG_0399.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXam61R3AZKSddCnUcApxZhiVXXcJFv3GbFyBxBfASQwj/IMG_0399.jpg)

These boxes are seeing much better usage out of them this season.

![IMG_0400.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmX2GLcMy4VAjArMJKPwrj4rhTweotQHEwZ9rLQjx8vYXo/IMG_0400.jpg)

Strawberries are about a week away from ripening to perfection. Haven't had the rodent issue stealing them all this year yet.. but they are probably waiting for them to ripen too, before snatching them up.

![IMG_0401.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmckw3znKG3v5k7bekhF1Pui4SeBDSHL8iKj2ZTn7SA7KK/IMG_0401.jpg)

A plenitude of strawberries. Makes me hype. So much sweeter than store bought, California shipped, shit fed strawberries.

![IMG_0402.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPd7onqUC38HsN5HSsCgWUpLvjbiWdmbzHBoFQ664mmZH/IMG_0402.jpg)

Ahhh my sun scorched tomatoes... I came out one fine afternoon to see this select species of tomato plant suffering from some ailment.. but I wasn't sure what. I suspected it might be a new fungus I introduced when I brought the stakes over from the other property to use here, but ruled that out when I saw the other varieties of tomato weren't affected.

And the pattern of the affliction just doesn't seem to fit a fungus type symptom. So upon review of the interwebs informational offerings, I conclude this to be sun scorching. Which I also found this exact species of tomato seems to experience often, the pineapple tomato species.

![IMG_0404.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcr9v6qafRdwZb227hFTRBoDCCTzx7xENCit1vYsXVZXo/IMG_0404.jpg)

![IMG_0405.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUC1abjxo9qBm8E24ZJbNTSFKDNVadrhyQ7xuUfmUdft8/IMG_0405.jpg)

Interesting pattern. I feel the plants will be fine.

![IMG_0412.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWQM7ENiAjPL6TT7GtsfbDskBdeL6HDuL7mPHeoJNhDDy/IMG_0412.jpg)

Hardly had to do a thing to get these potato plants to what they are now.. Just stuff em in the dirt.

![IMG_0415.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWRm3kPhvzd23TAr4gpaxsd1t2eN42KEphWxri8jsyvTK/IMG_0415.jpg)

![IMG_0411.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmct94fKSBtRG2hsvzQyCwTeeiGzTChpr3RQaqJKKUWAoW/IMG_0411.jpg)

Two rows of fantastic potato plants. Nice. And they are already beginning to flower. Nicer. Going to be harvesting some early taters this season. Definitely aiming for two rounds of harvests.

![IMG_0413.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSsPauetJn9rqeMGvyFCjPnxXg46zSLnXa6TVcLk9aeWN/IMG_0413.jpg)

The lettuce is growing larger. The long part is harvesting and cleaning since I don't have any mulch laid down yet. Lots of dirt kicked up with each heavy rain.. a nice light rain to wash them off would be clutch before harvest which is coming soon.

![IMG_0414.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTsYwwMRRWYJ5w89epvQgvHJBAa5isUuhJuBeYF1fuc4S/IMG_0414.jpg)

Green peas are thriving. Undisturbed soil is the way to go for green peas. Waiting on those first few pods.. so sweet and crisp.

![IMG_0416.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXDPvZnw2EcsJSfibS2U1kJAqrbsN66JNyHVwiu7WpRTB/IMG_0416.jpg)

Herb box is out of control! I really wanted a lot of dill this year, so I expect this box will look even more crowded in another week or two. I see one basil plant, a ton of dill, horseradish, lettuce and spinach all working together to compete against the heavily favored weeds for nutrients. Plenty to go around however.

![IMG_0410.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRmaVAw6SzCtHaom7oTbkMP2gqt7CgxnTircurbp6wQ7x/IMG_0410.jpg)

What was once barren dirt, is reborn with life.

![IMG_0420.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcogeaXVUGHxDKb141n3PfqY53U4NPRWjdirCZH6pe8Lf/IMG_0420.jpg)

All protected by some dinky chicken wire fencing. I guess it has worked well so far.

![IMG_0417.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdpkYRkVVmvCTDLTaQYcW68KetBG9cthucJx9ngYKiiqp/IMG_0417.jpg)

The hugel mounds are performing excellent. Nutrients abound. Must be the case, just peep the size of those plants!

Legit, I planted potato spuds that were perhaps the size of a marble in this mound not thinking anything would really grow.. Well shit I was wrong. I'm going to be pulling potatoes out from a seed potato the size of my pinky nail.

![IMG_0418.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdskhZmibEZw2qbLsJKGEPaykLFfbCvc2rqvDEyaxKvuk/IMG_0418.jpg)

I need to find the time to get these transplants in the dirt. They are growing to fill out their containers and soon I will be SOOL if I don't move soon and drop em in the dirt. They dry out regularly and thus I risk killing them if I forget just one day of watering.

![IMG_0419.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPbvnYCfCRYc4mNVKYxinrtvf2iWz5NUEPjBC8jbrwgcV/IMG_0419.jpg)

![IMG_0422.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVCJJGgAnNKoksnXSnt4PpjEEuJvYnjQyyJJMgy7Ay8oU/IMG_0422.jpg)

Blueberries beginning to fill out their flower blossoms. And now I have the understanding of how they grow. I was wondering where the begin forming when I saw the flower petals dropping and now fruit yet... But no panic.

![IMG_0423.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVfWB9fbHzajFcRw2p8qFzX7XsJJVvtPcXKWW9W4jiwm6/IMG_0423.jpg)

Thus concludes this update of the garden in Mid May 2019. James is 2 months and 1 day old, today. He is a blessing each and every day, and I am thankful as always.

You are having a great start to your growing season. We are still hiding our plants inside as we are still getting frost at night.

You are doing great in the garden so far this year.

Looking forward to updates.

You have all my favorite things in your garden! I don't even remember when I had strawberries that tasted like real strawberries. But I'll be back at home in a few weeks and I hope that the season is still going there so I will be able to get some from my uncle's garden..

I think I would eat that lettuce already. I couldn't stand just looking at it without trying it :) Oh, and well done with those potatoes! The early potatoes are so delicious and you can use your chives again!

Wonderful garden! Thank you for sharing and have a lot of fun with gardening :)

Congratulations on your curie vote!

I would love to eat all the lettuce.. if I could have found some time to harvest before the groundhog came and cleaned the whole patch.....

I guess I know what I'll be hunting the next few weeks.. I am an omnivore, you know.. and groundhog makes for some good eatin', since all they eat is MY lettuce and greens.

hi @biffybirdcam, your garden is incredible! all the effort you've made to prepare it has rewarded you with a fantastic result! I would love to have a garden with flowers and vegetables, but I don't know if I would be able to work on it. my friends gave me only succulent plants, because I said that I made them all die! I think it's all a matter of light. do you believe that some people have a green thumb and others don't?
congratulations on the curie vote and thanks for sharing with us

Ahh I got some plants going at a friends house for him.. they ended up dead too. I do think it has a lot to do with the lighting. Leggy plants because of low light have frail stems and die easily. Plants unexposed to wind grow weaker I believe as well.

But there is something about knowledge that goes a long way. I don't claim to know everything.. but the effort I put in helps cover my mistakes.

Great picture at the end :) Looks like a metaphor to the garden, everything is growing now like as James.
I have a lot of respect for the work you put in the garden. It was a lot of work I can imagine O.o but in the end you will be rewarded :)
I hope your sun also has the green thump :P
Cheers,

Thank you for the kind comment. I too make that analogy all the time in my mind. My boy is growing at about the same rate it seems as the plants.. but he will continue to grow!

Life is a strange thing. Certain plants need humans to cultivate in particular climates, and humans rely on those certain plants for food. We are all living, just at different speeds.

What a pretty garden, and your hard work in making it what it is today, kudos to you.
I wonder, how we cannot control sun and the rains, the weather and they can literally spoil or bloom the harvest as per their mood.

Yes the weather is wayyyy more important than people give credit. I say it all the time to my friends, "It literally controls everything we do."

And you can sit there and think of how it does.. and the list will go on and on.

We had epic thunderstorms here on Sunday, with a tornado or two dropping within 10 miles of our location, knocking a few trees down and taking a roof off. That is an acute example of weather's fury.. long term climate can have more of a lasting effect. Erratic temps make growing food difficult.

What a wonderful garden you have there. Nice detail to close with James (blessings to him). He and the garden seem to be syncronized for healthy growth :)
It must be both exciting and stressful to take good care of every plant in that garden. If you can fly me there from venezuela I'll work free for you :)

Hello @biffybirdcam and congratulations for the nice garden. looks like you have a little bit of everything planted and apart from the damage made on tomatoes, the rest is looking good. I envy you for the spinach, lettuce, strawberries and blueberries. We don't have those in the garden and I love them. I buy spinach from the farmers market and put it in the freezer so I can have it during winter. Lettuce I buy all the time as I love it for soup.
The climate must be warmer at your part of the world. I'm not saying it's cold here but we had a lot of rain lately and everything is muddy, there's too much water already. I hope it won't be raining for a wile now as it's enough. The garden needs sunny days so the plants can grow.
Our blueberry tree "passed away" a few years ago, I don't know why but we have currant, gooseberry and mulberry, all looking great at the moment.
You have an interesting system for beans. We usually use sticks and use a similar system as yours for tomatoes and cucumber.
I'm looking forward to your next report, I find then very interesting.

We are just living the best life we can here in Southeast Pennsylvania.

I would like to thank Heavenly Father for the actual opportunity to build such a wonderful garden. And this is only the beginning..

The climate has been whacky for everyone! Welcome to the Grand Solar Minimum. Erratic temps and extreme precipitation can make growing food a challenge, again I am simply fortunate to have been spared any destructive weather so far. Heavy downpours yeah, but no damaging wind this season yet.

But this pesky groundhog... has made himself a home and has begun stealing everything..
