There are many avenues that people are pursuing which negates the power of the central corporations that are so well known to all of us. However, do not underestimate their power to hold on. Google, along with FB, Apple, etal, are on the cutting edge of things. Contrast this with the average person who is totally naive to what is going on. Two cases in point. How many people give Microsoft money for Office when Open Office is a free download? How many used windows at $100+ a pop when Ubuntu (to name one) was free? The power of FB, YouTube, and Apple is the ecosystem...once people are locked in, they resist change.

Yes, lock-in is always last resort for these big dinosaurs. Sad thing is that Google once started as a "good guy" and it didn't need any lock-in totalitarian policy and still had significant user adoption. But it's hard in this world not being compromised.
