What's shocking is that it hasn't been talked about until recently. We knew about the [ocean garbage patches](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch), but a lot of the plastic is in tiny pieces being eaten by every creature.

It's is weird because it seems like a problem that could be easily solved through deploying machines to collect the plastic, it seems almost criminal that it has not happened already.
