Exposure to the Western Diet linked to diabetes and cardiovascular disease

Many people around the world admire the west and American culture. American art, music, movies, as well as technology, are exported all around the world.  The study below of course was done on rats so while it doesn't tell us what it does to humans it does seem to be the case that humans are negatively effected by the western diet:

> For five months, researchers Maria Alicia Carrillo Sepulveda, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biomedical Sciences at NYITCOM, and Benjamin Kramer, fourth-year medical student, exposed the animals to a meal supplement resembling the ingredients of the typical American diet, regularly feeding them pellets with an appearance and scent similar to fast-food French fries. Following this short-term exposure, the researchers discovered that the rats' blood vessels displayed damage and increased blood pressure, symptoms common among diabetics. Surprisingly, the rats developed approximately four times more abdominal fat, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, than their control group counterparts, which received a normal maintenance chow diet.

This might help to explain the high rates of diabesity in the west. Americans are dealing with an obesity, diabetes, and heart disease epidemic. This is in the crisis stage where American children are now becoming obese and type 2 diabetic. The western diet may be partially to blame for this but also the genetics of certain children are more vulnerable to diabesity and heart disease. In children who have known risk factors such as family history of diabetes then the western diet becomes a dangerous trigger.

It is for this reason that I question the popularity of SSRIs given to children while at the same time Metformin is not. SSRIs are shown to increase risk of type 2 diabetes while Metformin has been shown to decrease at least the symptoms and reduce the negative outcomes. It is true that Metformin has risks as it might impact the liver, but at the same time the risk vs reward has to be considered if a child is obese and or has a family history of type 2 diabetes while also consuming the American diet. Of course it is best if children do not need SSRIs or Metformin.

And, have you heard about the study that looked at city mice vs country mice?

Similar results to these rats were found in the city mice eating pizza and fries.

I think you may find this interesting Www.jackkrise.com/getting-started-guide 138 or so years.. 5 generations ago we plugged in the first lightbulb. Before that washerwomen were obese... They were the original entrepreneurs...to have a washerwoman as a wife in the depression was like striking gold. :)  The washerwomen worked at night...longer light cycles = carb cravings.  Why?

We are a carbohydrate filled society. Carb products are the cheapest available and when we donate food to 3rd world countries it is very high in processed carbohydrates. A meal should contain only 15 to 25 carbs. This is plenty to provided needed energy unless you work out on a regular basis. Yet most American meals when eating out contain upwards of 150 carbs. This is a MAJOR contributor to the epidemic. (Note: I am not a doctor, I have lived with diabetes over 35 years and try to stay up to date on treatment options.)

gotta feel sorry for them rats!  I've spent the last year delving deeper and deeper into the western diet and modifying mine to optimise my health. The main problem it seems is the processed food which contains high amounts of fat and sugar, further exacerbated by processed salt.  

cut out sugars and you're half way there it seems. once you cut out sugars your body will burn it's preferred fuel; fat.  as long as you are eating a high carb intake your body will never burn fat. it has to burn carbs first. once your body become a fat burning machine you lose weight fairly quickly. Similar to Atkins, it seems surprising that you can eat a full fat diet and be slim. Your blood tests should also show text book health after 6 months of a low carb, high fat diet. A high fat, high protein diet with (low carbs) is essential for proper maintenance of your organs. if you add in a lot of the right kind of veg, nuts, salad and oils you should see an improvement in every aspect of your health. eating a low fat diet with lots of carbs is not very healthy. I've mostly been eating a mediterranean diet. massed of olives, salad and meat. It's not as crave-worthy as a pizza but it works for optimal health

Paleo or Mediterranean, makes the most sense in terms of optimal health. I would do a modified Paleo, with good quality dairy and some rice or quinoa. Healthy animal fats and protein are, for me, essential to proper brain function. Your brain is made up of mostly cholesterol. I know when I begin my day with a nice cup of coffee with grass fed butter I feel clear-minded and ready for the day ahead. Add a few eggs and I'm totally ready to start the day. 

I've never reached ketosis, but I need to try it in the future. When I did Paleo for 30 days, I felt incredible. It was also very difficult to follow for a long period of time. I've made the decision to dramatically reduce gluten for the time being, though I know certain gluten replacements are really not that good either.

People should cut carbs and fast foods that are fried and drown in unknown sweety sour sauces containing so much unhealthy ingredients. It is simple. Do some sport or fast walking for an hour every day and eat clean. Low carbs, no sugar and moving keeps you in shape.
