I'm sorry to hear that; you should look for items that you can carry in the open that will serve as effective weapons (avoid obvious things like sword-canes and spike-umbrellas, most LE recognize these items anyway); a hardwood short cane can serve as an umbrella handle, for example, or a roll of coins is good for one (or two) punches.
