The motive behind the construction of the rail system in India

The rail system in India was the key emblem of colonial rule, connecting several parts of India together. However the way used to build rail system, seemed that the intention of the British was not to develop India. Their main objective was to enhance colonial rule. The construction started during Dalhousie’s rule in 1853. Dalhousie needed to make a quick transport for the army. Later, he started to connect markets, ports, cities and regions producing raw materials. In this way British product entered into Indian market.

British invested a huge capital to construct the rail system. A loan could be taken from colonial revenue at 5% interest in case of special need. The companies who were engaged to build railways, got land at 99 year old lease and tax was waived on those lands. The British had to reclaim the land after its expiry. A return of capital and all expenditure could be claimed by the companies before the expiry of the lease from the government upon returning it to the railways. Many profit making companies involved in railway construction. More than seven crore Pounds were invested to construct Indian railways from 1859 to 1869.

The British established the railways to protect colonial interests. Many British products directly reached Indian market from the ports at cheap price through the railways. It needed higher cost in exporting products to the ports. In this way a partiality was seen even in the transport cost of raw materials.

With the construction of the rail system, the British economy started to grow up. All the tools that were used to construct the railways, even coal was brought from Britain. They brought foreigners to apply advanced technologies in the railways construction. Indians were taught about the basic technology, but they were deliberately kept aside from the advanced technologies of the railway construction. Natural drainage systems were damaged due to the railway construction. Many harmful diseases were broken out and spread during the construction of railways. Numerous trees of forests were cut down, leading to environmental pollution. The forest dwellers were not happy with railway construction, as it damaged their lands and affected their living and social prestige. This was also one of the reasons which made Indians against British rule.

A lot of discussions happened on the necessity of railways in colonized India. Many Indians felt that the drainage system should have been first priority for the government. It is an essential part of the society. No one can ignore it. They were also against of the policy of providing loans from Indian revenue to the companies who were engaged in the railway construction. In this way the wealth was going out of the country. Indian society gave diverse reaction on the railways. However, railways established the connection between North and South, East and West in India. Public and commodity markets got easier transport system.
