The French had a very unusual sub in WWII. They wanted a submersible cruiser and made one! This monster could submerge and surface and gun battle like a cruiser. These were heavy guns (8 inch if memory serves) in an armored turret. But then the Japanese had an air craft carrier that submerged too! The photo was from a composite historical archive from yahoo. I have NO IDEA where it came from originally.  Das Boot is a good movie! You should get a copy! You are right about the U Boats, it was a close thing! When we loaned the old four stacker destroyers to England, that may have been the only thing that kept them afloat. The real victory on the U-boats was cracking Enigma! THAT single thing was the entire Battle of the Atlantic; combined with the production capacity of this country. *`:)`*
