Mario Cart is absolutely the best game for kids. We went up to my sister @straycat's place for Christmas, and my son and my nephew had such a blast playing it. My nephew is 6 years old and he played a few times already so he is good enough to race each of us and I think he might have gotten 5th or 6th once. My son was only 5 and never played before so he was all over the place going backwards, crashing into stuff lol. I suppose it is not co-op, but it's still fun!

Co-op is best in the way that I can help him out if he does get stuck, but local multiplayer is just as much fun to do together. Have your 5yo play 'regularly', and you'll notice he'll get better real fast. Kids have a way of picking up things much faster than us 'older' folks.
