In 1967, John Lennon wrote the song"all you need is love". He also: beat both of his wives, abandoned one of their children, showered with homophobic and anti-Semitic insults his Jewish Manager, who is gay, and once a day sat in front of a crowd of people naked.
Thirty-five years later, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote the song "Love is not enough". Reznor, despite his fame for shocking stage performances and grotesque disturbing clips, got rid of drug and alcohol addiction, married a woman, had two children with her, and then cancelled subsequent Studio and touring activities to stay home and become a good husband and father.
One of these men has a pure and realistic understanding of love. The other doesn't. One of them idealizes love, seeing it as a solution to all problems. The other isn't. One of them was probably a narcissistic jerk. The second was not.
In our culture, many idealize love. We see it as a sublime panacea for all life's problems. Our films and stories in the books mark it as the ultimate goal of life, the ultimate deliverance from all the painful struggle. And because we idealize love, we overestimate it. As a result, our relations have to pay for it. 
When we believe that" all we need is love, " like Lennon, we tend to ignore fundamental values: respect, humility, and commitment to the people we care about. After all, if love solves everything, why should I tire myself with other things – complicated things?
But if, as Reznor, we believe that "love is not enough", we understand that a healthy relationship requires more than pure emotions or high passions. We understand that there are things more important in our lives and in our relationships than just being in love. And the success of our relationship depends on deeper and more important values.
