But how can we know a person more that just on the surface?

It's by being friends with the person and watching the person act as he or she would on a normal day. The reason why this step is important is that, at this point he/she doesn't know you're interested in him/her and so there'll be no pretence.

Normally this process of getting to know the person will take time. Typically months to a year or two depending on how much you see each other and how much time you two spend doing things together. After this stage, you can then make your intentions known to the person and take the necessary steps to marriage.

So I'd say between 1 and 2 years.

How long do you recommend it takes for a person to get to know a partner before getting married to him/her?
1.1"}"

Each couple will be different, and time isn't necessarily the overriding factor.

Getting married is different than being single, dating, or any other experience most people have prior with the possible exception of some kind of business partnership, where you are dependent on someone else for some level of trust and loyalty.

So, it's going to take however long it's going to take for both parties to feel trust and to be loyal to one another. Observing how the other acts, solves problems, thinks, believes, how they are around children, people in general, what their hopes and dreams are like—none of that takes very long to ascertain if you're in the right places and under the right circumstances.

If you've spent your time dating in only fun, thrilling, exciting places or ways, then you're probably going to miss out on a whole lot of information and observation. If you have a mixture of fun and serious types of activities, that allows for plenty of real communicating with actual feelings, as well as actions, then there's probably going to be more of an opportunity to get to know the other person.

There are probably some educational and financial considerations to make, too, but neither of those should unduly prolong when a marriage takes place. There should be sufficient to begin a life together, but not so much that it takes forever for a marriage to occur. People change, they grow apart, and taking too long might mean it never comes to fruition because there's never going to be enough money or security.

I've known people who took a long time to get married. I've known others who took weeks. In the case of myself and my wife, we've been married for nearly 30 years now, and our engagement lasted six and a half months. It took only two months to get engaged. I know that's not typical, and I don't know that everyone should do it that way, but time was not the main factor for us, and I don't think it will be for most people.

How long do you recommend it takes for a person to get to know a partner before getting married to him/her?
1.1"}"
