The science that discovers again the real secret behind the scenes of evolution: random mutations! Amazing, and it puzzles me so much why it seems to be a forgot thing.

Two counterthoughts:

- Probabilisticly speaking, it holds true that you want to keep that number low, so you work on the factors you can work on, since chance can't be controlled. So, it still makes sense to have a good lifestyle — whatever good means!
- When a mutation happens, it really doesn't matter if it happened because of uncontrollable chance, or because of external controllable factors. It matters only if it is a good or a bad mutation.

So, after all, some people will die, but the survivors should carry on better genes.

As genetic factor has been isolated at 5%, and the fact that mutation of cells is a regular affair, with or without this random "fault", I do not think survivors will necessarily carry forward "better" genes as the probability of a random error is always there.

It depends on what you mean by “better”. On a long time scale, “better” means that the population with those genes is not doomed to extinction. But you can say it for sure only on a long time scale, long but not too much, since at the end of the universe we will be all extinct! :-D

From the perspective of someone who has extensively studied DNA replication, this research makes a lot of sense, it only takes one bad mutation in one cell one time, to result in a tumor growing out of that one cell.
