Cool , thanks for checking my post out :)  . I actually started taking photos with a point and shoot camera , it wasn't the greatest , but it was pretty cool when that's all I was using. There will always be better equipment out there no matter what level you are at , so might as well get started with what ever you have. But one thing i would suggest starting out is to definitely have a tripod of some sort , and take a 30 sec shot of the sky and before you know it you'll get some pretty good results with that :)
  In saying that though , to be able to photograph galaxies you are going to need a telescope and something to track the sky. And with the telescope , the bigger the lens or mirror the better , you need as much light-gathering power you can get :)
