Politics in Hip-Hop 1

With the current state of hip-hop drowning in mumble rap and meaningless lyrics...

Starlito & Don Trip team up to deliver creative story-telling with accents of political and social commentary. These are two of my favorite rappers, and they have a story to tell.

Starlito - Nashville, TN & Don Trip - Memphis, TN

Step-Brothers - Karate in the Garage Mixtape (2017)

Song: Whistle Blowers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02C_4dayu3g

Don Trip:

Some monkeys got lost but the show don't stop
Extra banana inside my sock
I don't believe half the shit I see
Cause they make anything in photoshop
I seen a picture with me and Barack
And I know damn well I wasn't there
Y'all know damn well I ain't vote
Nigga Jerry Lawler out running for mayor

Don Trip references fake photos of him and Barack Obama, claiming not only did he not take a picture, but that he does not vote. He goes on to reference Memphis native, pro wrestler & WWE commentator Jerry Lawler running for mayor in the circus that is politics. Why the fuck would he care about taking the picture with a president since he doesn't vote, followed by stating politics is such a joke, that even Jerry Lawler can run for office. In a way this also applies to Trump running for office.

Full lyrics for Whistle Blowers

Song: Dead Presidents

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OOj4vX-62o

Don Trip:

Paranoia's taking control
I look my kids to the movies
You spent your day at the polls
I'm watching the fairy tale
You live in the fairy tale
Fuck your president no matter who's elected I don't care
Fuck it, carry on, we living in hell but it's a happy home
I'm just making sure my babies eat when daddy's gone
Godspeed

I love this verse from Don Trip. He touches on people going out to vote while he'd rather take his kids to the movies. It appears he feels like it makes more of a difference to spend time with your children than it matters who he would vote for. As in, it doesn't matter. He re-affirms this with the follow up stating while he's watching the fairy tale, voters are living in a fairy tale. He goes on to say fuck your president, not matter who's elected he doesn't care. I feel like this also affirms that it's not just about the joke of Lawlers and Trumps running for elected office, but that it's anyone, including the top of both political parties. Spoken like a true anarchist, or at bare minimum, a non-participant.

Starlito:

Last night I had a dream that the president died
Woke up he was still alive I felt like crying, damn
Changed the channel and seen something about a travel ban
What the fuck man, every Muslim ain't the Taliban
I don't wanna go to war with all the Mexicans
Got everybody on ten like Thomas Jefferson
From apprentice to corporate menace
America played their trump card
I speak for the disenfranchised furniture in their front yard
The tax increase got me jacking these beats
Damn near back in the streets
When I was happy to leave

Starlito begins with his feelings about Donald Trump, dreaming that he died. He moves on to the Trump travel ban, stating that, "every muslim ain't the Taliban." He goes right in on another of Trump's policies, the wall on the Mexican border. He doesn't want a "war" with the Mexican community, and for everyone to be turned all the way up to 10, with a reference of former president Thomas Jefferson on the 10 dollar bill.

Starlito & Don Trip - Step-Brothers 3 Album (2017)

Song: Good Cop, Bad Cop

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXBW-beyBGY

Not only is this a great song with commentary on the the current environment of the police in the US, they pair it with a very well done, creative video. With the current state of hip-hop deteriorating into meaningless lyrics, and mumble raps, it's refreshing to see and hear genuine story-telling in this song. They paint a vivid picture with the lyrics, and bring the story to life with this video.

Song: The 13th Amendment Song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=288Ygd6KmCE

Just listen to this gem. Plenty of social commentary, comparisons of record deals to slavery, and political references.

Closing

It's hard to get a sense of where exactly Starlito stand politically, but his music is always charged up with political and social commentary. He brings lyrical creativity with substance. Don Trip definitely has the tendencies of an anarchist at best, libertarian at worse. Really I'm not sure if he cares about a label other than he wants you to know he doesn't give a fuck due to the current state. He brings story-telling lyrics with in your face political commentary.

Both are filled with very creative social and political commentary.

@coloured-content ·
Interesting post.

I think dolnald trumps presidency is such a good thing because for some reason it is waking people up, though I don't know why, he hasn't done anything like what past presidents have allowed to happen, and orchestrated, including obomber.

We'll see how he does. Its hard to find out whats really happening with all the disinformation.

Wrote this a while ago.
Feel free to check it out.
