Yes, you are right in saying and talking about all the bad times that may happen in a person's life. Yet, it will always depend on how we cope with any negative moments that may occur in our existence. Each individual may differ on how they cope as what you have mentioned. At the end of the day, it all depends in us because what happened to us either within our control or beyond our control, it is just us who knows how to perceive our emotions.
