<p>One of the many reasons I back up my content to Steemit and an external drive is that the definition of “misinformation/disinformation” CISA, tech conglomerates and their academic/NGO front groups use extends well beyond false and misleading information into anything that doesn’t fit their dogmatic narrative, undermines trust in institutions they control and threatens their precious profit margins; evidence offered is no defense if they decide it fits those other criteria. Alphabet Inc. has provided us yet another example of this by threatening the gate keeping establishment site Naked Capitalism with demonetization for among other things publishing links to scientific literature in peer reviewed journals like JAMA that document the rapid waning of booster induced immunity to SARS-COV-2 across several observational studies. Google’s AI misinformation bot slapped the label “antivaccination” on the link making it clear that “misinformation” has much more to do with what does and does not reinforce their class interests and less to do with the truth. The <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2804451">JAMA meta-analysis</a> of 40 different observational studies appears in my <a href="https://choicenotcoercion.quora.com/Which-is-more-effective-in-preventing-COVID-19-Ivermectin-or-the-COVID-vaccine-4">own answer</a> which Google would probably consider disinformation despite simply summarizing the findings of 150 studies 97 of which are peer-reviewed. Google’s “Misinformation” AI also flagged a link to a matched cohort study (n = 267,847), published in the <i><a href="https://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/10.2105/AJPH.2022.307112">American Public Health Association Journal</a></i>, that found that previously infected persons had a lower infection rate (2.9%) than virus naive vaccine recipients (6.7%) 6 months after their respective immunization event albeit with a 24% higher Emergency Department visit rate for pre-omicron variants. Google’s AI flagged this as “antivaccination”, “harmful health claims” and “hateful content”. Once again evidence is no defense of your content’s veracity when it's in contempt of carefully scripted Big Pharma narratives. Beyond seemingly mild criticisms of lockdowns, mandates and indemnity for modRNA manufacturers being labeled “harmful health claims”, “antivaccination” or “hateful” the bot also labeled a comment about Trump’s success being a blowback as “demonstrably false democratic process.”</p>

<p>Even credentialed scientists who conduct honest research are smeared as misinformation spreaders if their findings don’t conform to the dogmatic narrative of pharma stooges. Self-proclaimed “misinformation expert” Allison Nietzel who runs, or perhaps use to run, <a href="https://misinformationkills.org/">Misinformation Kills</a>, spent the past few years smearing Dr. Paul Marik and Dr. Pierre Kory of the <a href="https://substack.com%2F@substack.com/@flccc">Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance</a> for their honest work on ivermectin including a systematic review of its efficacy against COVID19 that they published in <i><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8088823/">American Journal of Therapeutics</a></i>, which I used as a reference for my post <a href="https://choicenotcoercion.quora.com/Ivermectin-as-a-COVID19-Prophylaxis">Ivermectin as a COVID19 Prophylaxis</a>. This so-called "misinformation expert” accused them of fraud and grifting without evidence and likely only retracted these statements recently to avoid litigation.</p>

I've come to the point that when people say, "I'm against violence." I think, "That's cute."

"Violence" is a fairly broad term. It's violent to murder somebody. It's also violent to shoot a would-be murder or rapist. 

Violence on violence happens all the time. The ethics of the violent acts depend on several factors.

The baseline libertarian position of being against "aggression" makes more sense.

You can use violence against an aggressor. You just aren't allowed to be the aggressor.

It would be a wonderful world if rapists and murderers didn't exist. We don't live in that world.

If you're in a situation wherein you can stop a heinous crime from happening by using violence, and you choose non-violence, your inaction is a moral issue in and of itself. 

Is your aversion to violence so great that you would let an act of violence happen in front of you while doing nothing about it? Would you just plead for mercy?

Most of us aren't against violence. Most of the people who claim that they're against violence are lying or stupid. Those few of us who are truly against violence were useless against the Nazis. Those few of us who are truly against violence are useless to call for if you're being murdered, robbed, or raped.

<p>Dolton, IL mayor Tiffany Henyard has come up with a unique extortion racket that I’ve certainly never heard being used in the U.S. Under her racket, business owners and pastors who don’t contribute to her campaign or <a href="https://wgntv.com/news/wgn-investigates/dolton-politicians-cancer-charity-got-almost-all-of-its-reported-money-from-taxpayers/">sham charity</a> mysteriously find their permits revoked or refused for renewal. At least one Church, Resurrection Power Assembly, has filed a <a href="https://edgarcountywatchdogs.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Doc.-001-Complaint.pdf">lawsuit</a> against the mayor and village of Dolton for prohibiting them from using their own property, which Resurrection Power Assembly already purchased and received a general permit to renovate, as a place of worship because it supposedly doesn’t fit the mayor’s plans to restrict the property to “commercial” purposes which she alleges includes charities, clubs, lodges and fraternal societies but not religious institutions. Under this pretext the village of Dolton denied the church a business license and subsequently the electrical and plumbing permits they would need to finish renovations and make the church a suitable place of worship and ministry. However, as the pastor has pointed out the particular zoning code applicable to his <a href="https://www.zoneomics.com/zoning-maps/illinois/dolton?address=703%20Sibley%20Boulevard%2C%20Dolton%2C%20IL%2C%20USA&lat=41.6222893&lng=-87.6023214">church property</a> (section 10-6B-2D) for “Business District: Limited Retail'' includes religious institutions as one of the miscellaneous use and a glance over of the village zoning map shows other religious institutions such as In His Presence Life Center and Grace Temple MB Church in similarly zoned parcels. The refusal to allow renovations and gatherings at the new property has forced the church to rent space for $1,000 a month at another location and has cut church attendance by more than half in less than a year, severely limiting revenue. The church is not the mayor’s only target. Other businesses such as a bar and gaming parlor (<a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/jnswire/jns-media/78/af/13396983/2023CH07019-complaint.pdf">Lacey’s Place LLC</a>) had their liquor license renewal denied because the village refused to complete its tax audit prior to its expiration, legally putting them out of business under state law while <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/dolton-mayor-tiffany-henyard-illinois-fbi-investigation/14458356/">Lawrence Gardner’s trucking company</a> had its business license revoked, without due process, on mere allegations of selling liquor at a party without a license. His business has been shuttered since January of last year despite a judge ruling in his favor. In a more recent update on this racket, a group of former employees of the mayor, the village of Dolton and Thornton Township, which pays Henyard 200K annually as their supervisor, have filed even more lawsuits over alleged <a href="https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/tiffany-henyard-lawsuits-thornton-dolton">wrongful termination</a>. One of the plaintiffs, Samysha Williams, was the director of Dolton’s Building Permits and Licensing Department who says she was fired for ‘refusing to withhold permits to business owners who did not make donations to Henyard while she was still on maternity leave.</p>
<p><blockquote>"She didn't want us to process business licenses and permits for certain business owners," said Samysha Williams. "She told me personally, because of one business owners in particular… I told her I said, ‘There's no reason for this business owner not to get his permits,' and she said, 'I don't care. Have his lawyer contact our lawyer.’"</blockquote></p>
<p>She also alleges that she was terminated for refusing to suppress FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests at Henyard’s direction. The Illinois AG has confirmed in a recent <a href="https://wgntv.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2024/02/Binding-Opinion-24-002.pdf">binding opinion</a> that the village and mayor do refuse to respond to FOIA requests for routine municipal financial transactions such as village credit card statements and leases for village vehicles in violation of section 3D of FOIA so it would not be wholly uncharacteristic of the mayor and village to apply the same secrecy elsewhere and retaliate against subordinates who threaten it.</p>

<p>Using some of the same language as the senate’s <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text">RESTRICT Act bill</a>, <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/text?s=1&r=1&q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22Tiktok%22%7D">HR7521</a>, which passed the house with a veto proof majority of both parties, would create a new executive power to designate any app, website, ‘augmented or immersive technology’ a national security threat and ban it if even a large minority of its equity is owned by persons under the jurisdiction of a designated ‘foreign adversary’ state such as the Russia or China the latter of whom the U.S. isn’t even engaged in a proxy war against. However, just as the designation “foreign adversary” apparently does not require the U.S. to be at war against or even in a proxy war against the designated country (as is the case with Russia and Iran), as the U.S has never been at war with China in its entire 248 year history, but the definition of ‘foreign adversary controlled applications’, which this bill would ban or force divestiture if signed into law, does not even require the application to be owned and controlled by agents, operatives, or military contractors of a foreign adversary but only <I>‘a foreign person that is domiciled in, is headquartered in, has its principal place of business in, or is organized under the laws of a foreign adversary country.’</I> Furthermore, persons conducting business and living under the jurisdiction of a designated ‘foreign adversary’ do not even have to own all or even a majority of the equity in a designated ‘foreign adversary controlled application’ but as stipulated in subparagraph B a 20% stake held by such persons would suffice to reach this designation or even the appearance that the application is partially or entirely owned by a person who subject to the ‘direction or control’ of person(s) living and/or conducting business under the jurisdiction of a designated foreign adversary. Companies that are considered ‘covered’ by this bill include subsidiaries and affiliates of companies that produce ‘foreign adversary controlled applications’ with as few as 1 million active monthly users or any company the president determines to be a ‘national security threat.’ Aside from being outright banned in the U.S. to avoid incurring civil penalties of $500-5,000 per U.S. user (congress is still unaware of the existence of VPNs) ‘covered companies’ would have to make a ‘qualified divestiture’ which entails cutting all ties between U.S. operations and any persons or entities under the jurisdiction of or affiliated with persons or entities under the jurisdiction of foreign adversaries.</p>
<p>As the <a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/03/congress-should-give-unconstitutional-tiktok-bans">EFF</a> correctly apprehends this bill’s blanket prohibitions would not only extend beyond Tiktok to other social media platforms such as WeChat and even e-commerce sites such as Alibaba, but wouldn’t even keep ‘foreign adversaries’ from buying our data from third party brokers and would destroy millions of small businesses that rely on the site for marketing and advertising, without just compensation under the takings clause, and mark the beginning of a national firewall in the U.S. Many of the GOP Chinahawks who voted for this bill don’t even care about stopping brokers from selling your data because just 7 years ago they chucked an <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2016/12/02/2016-28006/protecting-the-privacy-of-customers-of-broadband-and-other-telecommunications-services">FCC privacy rule</a>, through <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-joint-resolution/34/text">Senate Joint Resolution 34</a>, that would require ISPs to provide heightened disclosure and obtain affirmative consent before selling their customer’s data. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), the authoritarian shitbag who introduced this bill, <a href="https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/2017202">voted with the majority of the house GOP</a> in 2017 to allow ISPs to sell your data to third party brokers without disclosure or your consent.</p>

<p>Out of all the censorship bills introduced in congress over the past few years this one (<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/text">KOSA</a>) has the highest probability of becoming a law with 63 senators now supporting the bill split evenly along party and ideological lines. State censorship will probably come to the U.S. under the reframe ‘think of the children’ as it is the most likely to bypass everyone’s rationality and avoid ideological rifts. This one certainly does that while pretending to be content neutral and only applicable to minors. Of course, the text of the bill, which was revised at the end of last year, still allows congress to consider requiring age verification at the ‘device or OS level’ after the FCC, FTC, secretary of commerce and director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology conduct their study and report back to their respective house and senate committees (<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/text#idcf4f5fdf-6bd7-46c1-ab08-b3a4993ef449">Section 9</a>). The bill would also create a new bureaucracy called the Kids Online Safety Council that would advise the FCC on ‘safeguards’ and include tech representatives and people with potential financial ties to Tech. Even though the bill claims to not require ‘covered platforms’ to implement age verification the litany of harms ‘covered platforms’ are made liable for under ‘Duty of Care’ (<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/text#id44feef84-d084-43a7-8595-cbdedf4d2e0e">Section 3</a>) would make it infeasible to comply with this proposed law without age verification which would ultimately take the form of a digital ID to use the internet. ‘Duty of care’ requires covered platforms to prevent and mitigate a litany of common mental health problems including anxiety and depression, anything that can be remotely construed as ‘addiction-like behavior’ (not to be confused with actual physiological dependence) and any financial harms that may result from being stupid on social media. ‘Safeguards for Minors’ (<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/text#id1710dc69-cadd-4b86-a2a1-bd46873161e2">Section 4</a>) makes age verification even more unavoidable by requiring covered platforms to ‘limit the ability of other individuals (over the age of majority) to communicate with the minor’ and ‘restrict the sharing of the geolocation of the minor to other users (over the age of majority) on the platform.’ I’m assuming they mean restricting communication between minors and adults in this section because restricting their communication with anyone would entirely defeat the purpose of them using social media and would effectively be a blanket age restriction. Other stipulated safeguards include limiting innocuous ‘features’ such as autoplay, curation points, and even notifications. Even if the studies conducted by the aforementioned alphabet agencies in Section 7 and 9 don't find a need for mandatory age verification (i.e. digital ID) , social media companies would adopt it to avoid liability for all of the social problems they are tasked with ‘preventing and mitigating’ in Section 3 of this bill. The best case scenario if this becomes law is that social media companies will make the restrictions stipulated for minors the default setting for all users and require users to submit age verification through biometric ID to access all of their features. In this way they will claim that digital ID is “voluntary.”</p>

I actually had one of my best conversations in a long time today, and I don't know if the other guy knew how much his response meant to me. 

Y'all know that I'm a straight man, and a libertarian. The other guy is an older gay man, and pretty far to the left. 

At one point in the conversation, I brought up what Douglas Murray said about the LGBTQIA+ community, which was, "There are no two groups on the planet which have less in common than gay men and asexuals."

He just laughed, acknowledging the truth of the statement.

Then *he* offered the correct libertarian observation -- that if they keep adding letters, everyone will be in the community. 

Right! We can go back to the crazy idea of treating people as individuals!

I think a significant drift for me with libertarians was on this sort of thing. And it probably dovetails with a lot of other things that bothered me with libertarians like the pandemic and BLM.

It isn't so much that I think say Musk or Bezos' wealth should go to the government or something. Or that they can't do what they want with their money. It is more basic than that. It is that I think the top is significantly more morally righteous and praiseworthy. And we should go out of our way to lift up such individuals and acts. We shouldn't be so nihilistic about it.

This is probably why I find the term "virtue signalling" as an insult so repugnant.

Um we had the largest yearly decline in child poverty thanks to it. It seems a bit myopic to ignore the effects of current poverty on children's long-term development. And the families that received it spent it on basic necessities and education for the most part. In a world of government policy that is often ineffective or worsens things, this looks like a winner.

Also the concerns over employment harms are extremely overstated. The real-world evidence doesn't support the concerns. In some cases, the credit even helps families work more.
